What Is Karwa Chauth?
Karwa Chauth is a major Hindu festival observed mainly across North and West India, with devotees celebrating it throughout India and around the world. Many married women observe a strict nirjala vrat and avoid food and water until moonrise; others follow their familyβs specific fasting tradition.
The festival falls on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. Its name comes from two words: karwa, an earthen pot, and chauth, meaning fourth. It is also called Karaka Chaturthi. The festival honors the bond of marriage and the love and devotion between a wife and her husband.
Significance of Karwa Chauth
According to Hindu tradition, the fast brings the blessings of Goddess Parvati for a long and happy married life. Women also worship Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya.
In astrological belief, worshipping the moon with sixteen-fold (Shodashopachar) puja is said to strengthen the moon in one's birth chart and benefit married life. The first Karwa Chauth is especially meaningful for new brides.

Importance of Sargi
Sargi is the pre-dawn meal that a mother-in-law prepares for her daughter-in-law before the fast. It usually has fresh fruit, coconut, dry fruit, sweets, milk, pheni or seviyan, and tea. It nourishes the body for a long day ahead, and it is also a gesture of the mother-in-law's love. Drinking plenty of water or coconut water with sargi helps with hydration and electrolytes.
Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha (Short Version)
Veervati was the beloved only sister of seven brothers. On her first Karwa Chauth after marriage, she fasted and refused to eat until the moon rose. Her brothers could not bear to see her suffer, so they tricked her with a false reflection that looked like the moon. Veervati broke her fast, and soon after she heard that her husband had died.
Heartbroken, she hurried to him and met Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the way. Parvati told her to observe the Chauth fast again, with full devotion. Veervati did so, and her husband woke as if from a deep sleep. Since then, it is believed that Goddess Parvati blesses women who keep this fast. Read the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha of Veervati to understand the story behind this fast and the importance of observing it with devotion.
Rituals and Traditions
Women wear traditional sarees or lehengas, often red, for the evening puja.
Applying mehndi is a big part of the day, and mehndi artists are busy from the morning.
Many women get ready in full bridal-style shringar.
Women sit in a circle with their puja thalis and listen to the katha.
The day ends with a family feast after the fast is broken.
Fasting Tips and Safety
Eat a nourishing sargi with fluids, fruit, soaked nuts, and a light whole-grain item. Avoid very salty, fried, or spicy food, which increases thirst.
Keep the day light and avoid strenuous work.
Pregnant women, people who are unwell, diabetic, or elderly, and anyone advised otherwise by a doctor should not keep a strict nirjala fast without medical guidance.
Break the fast gently with water, fruit, and light food before a heavy meal.
The fast is a voluntary devotional practice, never a compulsion.
