Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha: Story of Veeravati and Her Brothers

Karwa Chauth is an important Hindu festival during which married women observe a fast and pray for the long life and good health of their husbands. The fast begins at sunrise and ends after women see the moon in the evening. The Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha is traditionally read or listened to during the evening puja, although the timing and rituals may vary by region and family tradition.

One of the well-known stories associated with this festival is about Karwa (Veeravati), who made a mistake while observing her first Karwa Chauth fast. Her story tells how she sought divine help after facing a heartbreaking situation.

Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha

Long ago, there lived a moneylender who had seven sons and one daughter named Karwa (Veeravati). All seven brothers loved their sister dearly. They would make sure she ate her meals before they sat down to eat themselves.

Once, Karwa visited her parental home after marriage. One evening, when her brothers returned home after finishing their work, they found her looking weak and distressed. They asked her to join them for dinner, but she explained that she was observing the Karwa Chauth fast and would not eat or drink until she had seen the moon and offered it prayers.

As the Moon had not yet risen, Karwa was feeling extremely hungry and thirsty. Her youngest brother could not bear to see his sister suffering. He decided to find a way to help her.

The youngest brother climbed a nearby peepal tree and placed a lit lamp behind a sieve. From a distance, the light looked like the moon shining in the sky. He then told Karwa that the moon had risen and that she could offer her prayers before eating. Believing him, Karwa looked at the light through the sieve, offered her prayers, and sat down to eat.

However, as she took her first bite, she sneezed. When she tried to eat the second bite, she found a strand of hair in her food. Before she could take her third bite, news arrived that her husband had died.

Karwa was devastated by the news. One of her sisters-in-law explained that her fast had been broken before the actual Moonrise, which was why she had faced such misfortune. Determined to save her husband, Karwa refused to let his last rites take place. She remained beside his body for an entire year, caring for it and collecting the sharp, needle-like grass that grew over it.

When Karwa Chauth came around again the following year, her sisters-in-law observed the fast. As each sister-in-law came to seek Karwa's blessings, she pleaded with her to give her the blessing of a long and happy married life by restoring her husband's life. Each one asked her to approach the next sister-in-law instead.

When the sixth sister-in-law arrived, she told Karwa that the youngest brother's wife was the one who could help her, as the youngest brother had been responsible for misleading her about the Moon. She advised Karwa to hold on to the youngest sister-in-law and not release her until she agreed to revive Karwa's husband.

Finally, the youngest sister-in-law came to see Karwa. When Karwa asked her for help, she tried to avoid the request. But Karwa held on to her firmly, pleading with her to bring her husband back to life. Despite the youngest sister-in-law's attempts to free herself, Karwa refused to let go.

Moved by Karwa's determination and devotion, the youngest sister-in-law finally agreed to help. She pricked her little finger and placed a drop of divine nectar into Karwa's husband's mouth.

Miraculously, her husband came back to life and rose, uttering the name of Lord Ganesha. Through divine grace and the youngest sister-in-law's intervention, Karwa was reunited with her husband.
