According to the Narada Pancharatra, Goddess Mahakali once decided to assume a fair complexion and disappeared from her abode. When Lord Shiva returned and could not find her, he became concerned and instructed Sage Narada to search for the Goddess.

After an extensive search, Narada found her on Mount Sumeru. When Narada mentioned a proposal related to Shiva's marriage, the Goddess became enraged. From her own body emerged a fierce form known as Bhairavi. This powerful manifestation came to be known as Tripura Bhairavi.

Texts such as the Rudrayamala and the Devi Bhagavata Purana describe her as one of the foremost powers of Lord Shiva and a fierce form of Mahakali.
