Who is Holika?
Holika was a figure in Hindu mythology, described as the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. She is traditionally portrayed as a powerful asura (demoness) and is associated with the festival of Holi.
Over time, her name became linked with Holika Dahan, symbolizing the destruction of negative forces and the ultimate victory of righteousness.
Holika Dahan 2026 Rituals and Puja Vidhi
Here’s everything you need to know about the Hoilka Dahan rituals and how to perform the puja right.
1. Preparation (Before the Day)
Setting Up the Holika Pyre:
Choose an open space in your community or backyard
Clean the spot with water (ideally Ganga Jal)
Build a pyre with dried wood, cow dung cakes, and naturally fallen sticks
Place a large wooden pole or branch at the center (representing Holika)
Tie colorful cloth strips around the pole
The pyre should be ready before the Holika Dahan muhurat begins
2. Before Lighting (During the day on March 3)
Clean the puja area thoroughly
Place a small idol or symbol of Prahlad near the pyre
Apply cow dung to the base of the pyre for purification
3. During the Muhurat Time (March 3)
Gather with family and community at the pyre
Offer flowers, rice, kumkum, and turmeric to Holika
Tie the sacred thread (Mauli) around the pyre, walking clockwise
Circumambulate the pyre 3-7 times while chanting mantras
As you walk around, unwind the sacred thread around the pyre. Place the coconut and new grains in the fire
6. Light the fire while chanting:
"Om Nrisimhaye Namaha" (Salutation to Narasimha)
"Om Prahlad Namo Namaha" (Honoring Prahlad's devotion)
"Holika Dahan Jai Ho"
As the fire blazes, roast new grains and coconut in the flames
Offer gulal to the fire and sing bhajans and devotional songs with community members
4. After the Fire (Next Morning, March 4):
Collect cooled ash from the bonfire
Apply an ash tilak on your forehead for protection
Some people mix the ash with water for ritual bathing
The sacred ash is considered protective and purifying
Every ritual has a reason. Here's the story behind why millions light this fire every single year.

Holika Dahan Story and Significance
The demon king Hiranyakashipu declared himself a god; everyone worshiped him except his own son. Prahlad, his own son, was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, and no threat could shake his faith.
After several failed attempts to kill his own son, Hiranyakashipu turned to his sister Holika, who had a magical shawl that made her immune to fire. The plan? Sit in a bonfire with Prahlad on her lap. She'd survive. He wouldn't.
But as the flames rose, Prahlad kept chanting Lord Vishnu's name without fear. The shawl flew off Holika and wrapped around Prahlad instead. Holika was burned to ashes. Prahlad walked out unharmed, still chanting.
The story doesn't end with Prahlad walking out of the fire. Its meaning continues to live in every bonfire lit on this day.
Here's what Holika Dahan truly stands for:
Burning Away Evil: The bonfire is transformative. People offer the negative qualities into the fire with sincere intention and turn this ritual into a genuine spiritual practice.
Community Bonding: Entire neighborhoods gather around one fire, setting aside any differences. Rich or poor, everyone stands around the same bonfire, which means Holika Dahan is equality in its purest form.
Transition and Renewal: Holika Dahan marks winter's end and spring's arrival. Just as fire consumes the old, spring brings new growth; some things need to burn before new things can bloom.
Prahlad's Lesson for Today: His faith wasn't shaken by his own father's threats or impossible circumstances.
In 2026, that kind of unwavering devotion to what's right is exactly what the world needs.
