Lord Dattatreya was born to Sage Atri and his devoted wife Anasuya, who is revered as one of the most virtuous women in Hindu tradition.
According to the legend, Sage Narada once praised Anasuya's purity and devotion before the goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati. Filled with curiosity, the goddesses requested their husbands—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—to test her virtue.
The Trimurti appeared at Sage Atri's hermitage disguised as ascetics and accepted Anasuya's invitation for a meal. However, they imposed a condition that she must serve them while unclothed.
Using her spiritual power and purity, Anasuya transformed the three gods into infants and lovingly fed them. Later, when Sage Atri lifted the children, they merged into a divine child with three heads and six arms.
Realizing their mistake, the goddesses sought forgiveness. The Trimurti then appeared in their original forms and blessed Atri and Anasuya with Lord Dattatreya as their son.
Lord Dattatreya is considered an incarnation of Vishnu, while his brothers, Chandra Deva and Sage Durvasa, are associated with the aspects of Brahma and Shiva respectively.
