Annapurna Jayanti 2026: Celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Margashirsha month, Annapurna Jayanti holds special significance for the worship of Goddess Annapurna and Lord Shiva. It is believed that offering prayers on this day brings blessings of abundance, prosperity, and a constant supply of food and nourishment in the household. Devotees eagerly await this auspicious occasion and worship the Goddess with deep devotion. Special dishes are prepared at home, offered to the Goddess as bhog, and later shared as prasad among family members.
Annapurna Jayanti 2026 Date and Timings
Annapurna Jayanti will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 23, 2026.
Purnima Tithi Begins: December 23, 2026, at 10:47 AM Purnima Tithi Ends: December 24, 2026, at 6:57 AM Food-Related Mistakes to Avoid
According to traditional beliefs, disrespecting food displeases Goddess Annapurna and may hinder the growth and abundance of food in the household. Therefore, one should always take only as much food as they can comfortably eat to avoid wastage.
Leaving uneaten food on the plate is also considered inauspicious. Additionally, sitting on the threshold of a doorway while eating is discouraged, as it is regarded as a sign of disrespect toward the Goddess.
Important Vastu Rules for the Kitchen
In Vastu Shastra, the arrangement of the kitchen is considered highly important. Fire and water are regarded as opposing elements. Therefore, placing the stove (fire element) and sink (water element) too close to each other may create Vastu imbalances. Maintaining an appropriate distance between them is believed to promote positive energy within the home.
Annapurna Jayanti 2026 Puja Vidhi
Follow these steps to perform the puja:
Take a bath early in the morning and wear clean clothes. Clean the worship area and purify it by sprinkling Gangajal. Clean the kitchen stove and offer turmeric, kumkum, rice, flowers, and incense. Prepare a joint altar for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Offer akshat (unbroken rice), flowers, and prepared food as bhog. Pray to Goddess Annapurna for abundance, nourishment, and prosperity. Perform the aarti of the Goddess. Donate food, clothes, or essential items to the needy according to your capacity. Why Did Goddess Parvati Take the Form of Annapurna?
According to the scriptures, including the Skanda Purana and the Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva once stated that everything in the world is an illusion (Maya), including food. Hearing this, Goddess Parvati withdrew all food from the Earth.
As a result, every living being suffered, and the world faced a severe food shortage. Realizing the consequences of his words, Lord Shiva acknowledged his mistake and sought forgiveness from Parvati.
At that moment, Goddess Parvati manifested as Goddess Annapurna and began providing food to people in Varanasi. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Annapurna Jayanti on Margashirsha Purnima has continued.
Mantra for Daily Chanting
To seek the blessings of Goddess Annapurna, it is considered highly auspicious to chant the following mantra in the kitchen during Brahma Muhurta or after sunset. It may be recited 11, 21, 51, or 108 times:
Annapurne Sada Purne Shankara Prana Vallabhe Jnana Vairagya Siddhyartham Bhiksham Dehi Cha Parvati।।
Mata Cha Parvati Devi Pita Devo Maheshwarah। Bandhavah Shiva Bhaktashcha Swadesho Bhuvanatrayam।।
