Shri Saptashloki Durga

Shri Saptashloki Durga is a deeply devotional text for the worship and praise of Mother Durga. Through seven verses, it describes the Goddess’s glory, her power, her compassion and her protective care for her devotees. In this text, the Mother is remembered as the power that removes fear, sorrow, poverty and all kinds of obstacles. Reciting the Saptashloki Durga with faith gives devotees a way to take refuge in the Goddess and express their devotion to her.

Atha Saptashloki Durga (॥ अथ सप्तश्लोकी दुर्गा ॥)

Shiva Uvacha (॥ शिव उवाच ॥)

देवि त्वं भक्तसुलभे सर्वकार्यविधायिनी।
कलौ हि कार्यसिद्ध्यर्थमुपायंब्रूहि यत्नतः॥

Devi Tvam Bhaktasulabhe Sarva-Karya-Vidhayini |
Kalau Hi Karya-Siddhyartham Upayam Bruhi Yatnatah ||

Meaning: Lord Shiva said: “O Devi! You are easily reached by your devotees, and you are the one who ordains all actions. If there is any means in the Kali Yuga by which one’s wishes can be fulfilled, please explain it clearly in your own words.”

Devyuvacha (॥ देव्युवाच ॥)

श्रृणु देव प्रवक्ष्यामि कलौ सर्वेष्टसाधनम्।
मया तवैव स्नेहेनाप्यम्बास्तुतिः प्रकाश्यते॥

Shrrinu Deva Pravakshyami Kalau Sarveshta-Sadhanam |
Maya Tavaiva Snehenapy Amba-Stutih Prakashyate ||

Meaning: The Goddess said: “O Lord! You have great affection for me. Listen, and I will tell you the means that fulfils every wish in the Kali Yuga. It is called the ‘Amba Stuti’ (the hymn of praise to the Mother).”

Viniyoga (॥ विनियोगः ॥)

ॐ अस्य श्रीदुर्गासप्तश्लोकीस्तोत्रमन्त्रस्य नारायण ऋषिः,
अनुष्टुप् छन्दः,श्रीमहाकालीमहालक्ष्मीमहासरस्वत्यो देवताः,
श्रीदुर्गाप्रीत्यर्थं सप्तश्लोकीदुर्गापाठे विनियोगः।

Om Asya Shri-Durga-Saptashloki-Stotra-Mantrasya Narayana Rishih,
Anushtup Chhandah, Shri-Mahakali-Mahalakshmi-Mahasarasvatyo Devatah,
Shri-Durga-Prityartham Saptashloki-Durga-Pathe Viniyogah |

Meaning: Om. The rishi (seer) of this Durga Saptashloki Stotra mantra is Narayana, its metre is Anushtup, and its deities are Shri Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. It is recited (viniyoga) as part of the Saptashloki Durga Path to please Shri Durga.

Verses

Verse 1

ॐ ज्ञानिनामपि चेतांसिदेवी भगवती हि सा।
बलादाकृष्य मोहाय महामाया प्रयच्छति॥1॥

Om Jnaninamapi Chetamsidevi Bhagavati Hi Sa |
Balad Akrishya Mohaya Mahamaya Prayachchhati || 1 ||

Meaning: That Bhagavati, the Goddess Mahamaya, forcibly draws even the minds of the wise and casts them into delusion. ॥1॥

Verse 2

दुर्गे स्मृताहरसि भीतिमशेषजन्तोः
स्वस्थैः स्मृता मतिमतीव शुभां ददासि।
दारिद्र्यदुःखभयहारिणि का त्वदन्या
सर्वोपकारकरणाय सदार्द्रचित्ता॥2॥

Durge Smritaharasi Bhitim Ashesha-Jantoh
Svasthaih Smrita Matim Ativa Shubham Dadasi |
Daridrya-Duhkha-Bhaya-Harini Ka Tvadanya
Sarvopakara-Karanaya Sadardra-Chitta || 2 ||

Meaning: O Mother Durga! When remembered, you take away the fear of every living being, and when thought of by those who are at peace, you grant them the most auspicious understanding. O Goddess, remover of sorrow, poverty and fear! Who else is there but you whose heart is always tender with compassion and ready to help everyone? ॥2॥

Verse 3

सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके।
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥3॥

Sarva-Mangala-Mangalye Shive Sarvartha-Sadhike |
Sharanye Tryambake Gauri Narayani Namo'stu Te || 3 ||

Meaning: O Narayani! You are auspiciousness itself, the giver of every kind of blessing. You are Shiva, the bestower of welfare. You fulfil all the goals of human life, you lovingly protect those who seek refuge in you, you are the three-eyed one and you are Gauri. Salutations to you! ॥3॥

Verse 4

शरणागतदीनार्तपरित्राणपरायणे।
सर्वस्यार्तिहरे देवि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥4॥

Sharanagata-Dinarta-Paritrana-Parayane |
Sarvasyarti-Hare Devi Narayani Namo'stu Te || 4 ||

Meaning: O Goddess Narayani, you who are devoted to protecting the helpless and the suffering who come to you for refuge, and who remove the pain of all — salutations to you! ॥4॥

Verse 5

सर्वस्वरूपे सर्वेशे सर्वशक्तिसमन्विते।
भयेभ्यस्त्राहि नो देवि दुर्गेदेवि नमोऽस्तु ते॥5॥

Sarvasvarupe Sarveshe Sarva-Shakti-Samanvite |
Bhayebhyas Trahi No Devi Durgedevi Namo'stu Te || 5 ||

Meaning: O divine Goddess Durga, you who are the form of everything, the ruler of all and endowed with every power — protect us from all fears. Salutations to you! ॥5॥

Verse 6

रोगानशेषानपहंसि तुष्टा रूष्टातु कामान् सकलानभीष्टान्।
त्वामाश्रितानां न विपन्नराणांत्वामाश्रिता ह्याश्रयतां प्रयान्ति॥6॥

Rogan Asheshan Apahamsi Tushta Rushtatu Kaman Sakalan Abhishtan |
Tvam Ashritanam Na Vipannaranan Tvam Ashrita Hyashrayatam Prayanti || 6 ||

Meaning: O Devi! When you are pleased, you destroy all diseases, and when you are displeased, you destroy all the desires one longs for. Misfortune never comes to those who have taken refuge in you; indeed, those who take refuge in you become a refuge for others. ॥6॥

Verse 7

सर्वाबाधाप्रशमनंत्रैलोक्यस्याखिलेश्वरि।
एवमेव त्वया कार्यमस्मद्वैरिविनाशनम्॥7॥

Sarva-Badha-Prashamanan Trailokyasyakhileshvari |
Evameva Tvaya Karyam Asmad-Vairi-Vinashanam || 7 ||

Meaning: O Supreme Ruler of all! In this way, calm all the troubles of the three worlds and continue to destroy our enemies. ॥7॥

Shri Saptashloki Durga praises the forms and divine powers of Mother Durga. Its seven verses pray for protection from fear, sorrow, disease, poverty and life’s obstacles, and devotees may recite it with faith, seeking her grace.
