Durga Saptashati Devimayi
Devimayi is a short hymn expressing that all speech and all forms in the world are the Goddess herself. This page gives the verses with their meanings.
Devimayi (॥ देवीमयी ॥)
Verse 1
तव च का किल न स्तुतिरम्बिके!सकलशब्दमयी किल ते तनुः। निखिलमूर्तिषु मे भवदन्वयो मनसिजासु बहिःप्रसरासु च॥
Tava Cha Ka Kila Na Stutirambike! Sakala-Shabdamayi Kila Te Tanuh | Nikhila-Murtishu Me Bhavadanvayo Manasijasu Bahih-Prasarasu Cha ||
Meaning: O Jagadambike! What speech is there in the world that is not a hymn of praise to you, since your very body is made of all words? O Devi! I have now begun to see your form in all the shapes that arise in my mind as thoughts and doubts, and in all the forms that appear before me in the world.
Verse 2
इति विचिन्त्य शिवे! शमिताशिवे!जगति जातमयत्नवशादिदम्। स्तुतिजपार्चनचिन्तनवर्जिता नखलु काचन कालकलास्ति मे॥
Iti Vichintya Shive! Shamitashive! Jagati Jatam Ayatna-Vashad Idam | Stuti-Japarchana-Chintana-Varjita Nakhalu Kachana Kalakalasti Me ||
Meaning: O Shiva, you who are the very form of auspiciousness and the destroyer of all that is inauspicious! Reflecting on this, I have now reached, without any effort, a state in which, throughout the whole moving and unmoving world, not even the smallest fraction of my time is without your praise, japa, worship or meditation. That is, all my conduct and dealings in the world have become your worship, because they are all rightly directed towards your different forms.
