Shri Durga Manas Puja

The Shri Durga Manas Puja is a hymn of mental worship, in which each offering to Goddess Tripurasundari is made in the mind through the verses.

Shri Durga Manasa Puja (॥ श्रीदुर्गामानस-पूजा ॥)

Verse 1

उद्यच्चन्दनकुङ्कुमारुणपयोधाराभिराप्लावितां नानानर्घ्यमणिप्रवालघटितां दत्तां गृहाणाम्बिके। आमृष्टां सुरसुन्दरीभिरभितो हस्ताम्बुजैर्भक्तितो मातः सुन्दरि भक्तकल्पलतिके श्रीपादुकामादरात्॥1॥

Udyach Chandana-Kunkumaruna-Payodharabhir Aplavitam Nananarghya-Mani-Pravala-Ghatitam Dattam Grihanambike | Amrishtam Surasundaribhir Abhito Hastambujair Bhaktito Matah Sundari Bhakta-Kalpalatike Shri-Padukam Adarat || 1 ||

Meaning: O Mother Tripurasundari! You are the wish-fulfilling creeper (kalpalata) that fulfils the desires of your devotees. Mother, these sandals (paduka) are respectfully offered at your holy feet; please accept them. They have been washed with a stream of red water mixed with the finest sandalwood and kumkum. They are made of many kinds of precious gems and corals, and many celestial maidens have devotedly washed and wiped them clean on all sides with their lotus hands. ॥1॥

Verse 2

देवेन्द्रादिभिरर्चितं सुरगणैरादाय सिंहासनं चञ्चत्काञ्चनसंचयाभिरचितं चारुप्रभाभास्वरम्। एतच्चम्पककेतकीपरिमलं तैलं महानिर्मलं गन्धोद्वर्तनमादरेण तरुणीदत्तं गृहाणाम्बिके॥2॥

Devendradibhir Architam Suraganair Adaya Simhasanam Chanchat-Kanchana-Sanchayabhirachitam Charu-Prabha-Bhasvaram | Etach Champaka-Ketaki-Parimalam Tailam Mahanirmalam Gandhodvartanam Adarena Tarunidattam Grihanambike || 2 ||

Meaning: Mother! The gods have brought this divine throne for you to sit on; be seated on it. This is the throne that even Indra, king of the gods, and others worship. It is made of heaps of gold gleaming with their own radiance, and it always shines with a charming lustre. Besides this, here is the purest oil, full of the fragrance of champa and ketaki flowers, and a fragrant ubtan (herbal paste), which divine maidens are respectfully offering in your service; kindly accept them. ॥2॥

Verse 3

पश्चाद्देवि गृहाण शम्भुगृहिणि श्रीसुन्दरि प्रायशो गन्धद्रव्यसमूहनिर्भरतरं धात्रीफलं निर्मलम्। तत्केशान् परिशोध्य कङ्कतिकया मन्दाकिनीस्रोतसि स्नात्वा प्रोज्ज्वलगन्धकं भवतु हे श्रीसुन्दरि त्वन्मुदे॥3॥

Pashchaddevi Grihana Shambhu-Grihini Shrisundari Prayasho Gandhadravya-Samuha-Nirbharataram Dhatriphalam Nirmalam | Tatkeshan Parishodhya Kankatikaya Mandakini-Srotasi Snatva Projjvala-Gandhakam Bhavatu He Shrisundari Tvanmude || 3 ||

Meaning: O Devi! After this, accept this pure amla (Indian gooseberry) fruit. O beloved of Shiva! O Tripurasundari! Almost every fragrant substance there is has been added to this amla, making it supremely fragrant. So apply it, comb out your hair, and bathe in the holy stream of the Ganga. After that, this divine fragrance is offered in your service; may it increase your joy. ॥3॥

Verse 4

सुराधिपतिकामिनीकरसरोजनालीधृतां सचन्दनसकुङ्कुमागुरुभरेण विभ्राजिताम्। महापरिमलोज्ज्वलां सरसशुद्धकस्तूरिकां गृहाण वरदायिनि त्रिपुरसुन्दरि श्रीप्रदे॥4॥

Suradhipati-Kamini-Karasaroja-Nalidhritam Sachandana-Sakunkumaguru-Bharena Vibhrajitam | Maha-Parimalojjvalam Sarasa-Shuddha-Kasturikam Grihana Varadayini Tripurasundari Shriprade || 4 ||

Meaning: O Tripurasundari, giver of wealth and bestower of boons! Accept this pure, moist musk (kasturi). Queen Shachi, the wife of Indra, king of the gods, herself stands in your service holding it in her lotus hands. Mixed with sandalwood, kumkum and aguru, it has become even more beautiful. Because of the abundant fragrance it gives off, it seems most delightful. ॥4॥

Verse 5

गन्धर्वामरकिन्नरप्रियतमासंतानहस्ताम्बुज- प्रस्तारैर्ध्रियमाणमुत्तमतरं काश्मीरजापिञ्जरम्। मातर्भास्वरभानुमण्डललसत्कान्तिप्रदानोज्ज्वलं चैतन्निर्मलमातनोतु वसनं श्रीसुन्दरि त्वन्मुदम्॥5॥

Gandharvamara-Kinnara-Priyatama-Santana-Hastambuja- Prastarair Dhriyamanam Uttamataram Kashmiraja-Pinjaram | Matar Bhasvara-Bhanu-Mandala-Lasat-Kanti-Pradanojjvalam Chaitan Nirmalam Atanotu Vasanam Shrisundari Tvanmudam || 5 ||

Meaning: Mother Shri Sundari! This most excellent, spotless garment is offered in your service; may it increase your delight. Mother! The beautiful beloveds of the gandharvas, the gods and the kinnaras stand holding it in their outstretched lotus hands. It is a yellow garment (pitambara) dyed with saffron. A divine radiance, as splendid as the shining disc of the sun, streams from it, which makes it look most beautiful. ॥5॥

Verse 6

स्वर्णाकल्पितकुण्डले श्रुतियुगे हस्ताम्बुजे मुद्रिका मध्ये सारसना नितम्बफलके मञ्जीरमङ्घ्रिद्वये। हारो वक्षसि कङ्कणौ क्वणरणत्कारौ करद्वन्द्वके विन्यस्तं मुकुटं शिरस्यनुदिनं दत्तोन्मदं स्तूयताम्॥6॥

Svarna-Kalpita-Kundale Shrutiyuge Hastambuje Mudrika Madhye Sarasana Nitamba-Phalake Manjiram Anghridvaye | Haro Vakshasi Kankanau Kvanaranat-Karau Karadvandvake Vinyastam Mukutam Shirasy Anudinam Dattonmadam Stuyatam || 6 ||

Meaning: May golden earrings keep sparkling in both your ears, a ring shine on one finger of your lotus hand, a girdle grace your waist and hips, anklets keep tinkling on both your feet, a necklace adorn your chest, and bangles keep jingling on both your wrists. May the divine crown placed on your head give joy every day. All these ornaments are worthy of praise. ॥6॥

Verse 7

ग्रीवायां धृतकान्तिकान्तपटलं ग्रैवेयकं सुन्दरं सिन्दूरं विलसल्ललाटफलके सौन्दर्यमुद्राधरम्। राजत्कज्जलमुज्ज्वलोत्पलदलश्रीमोचने लोचने तद्दिव्यौषधिनिर्मितं रचयतु श्रीशाम्भवि श्रीप्रदे॥7॥

Grivayam Dhrita-Kanti-Kanta-Patalam Graiveyakam Sundaram Sinduram Vilasal Lalataphalake Saundarya-Mudra-Dharam | Rajat-Kajjalam Ujjvalotpala-Dala-Shrimochane Lochane Tad Divyaushadhi-Nirmitam Rachayatu Shri-Shambhavi Shriprade || 7 ||

Meaning: O Parvati, giver of wealth and beloved of Shiva! Wear this bright and beautiful necklace (hansli) around your neck, place in the middle of your forehead the bindi of sindoor that bears the mark of beauty, and apply this kajal (kohl) to your eyes, which surpass the beauty of the loveliest lotus petals. This kajal has been prepared from divine herbs. ॥7॥

Verse 8

अमन्दतरमन्दरोन्मथितदुग्धसिन्धूद्भवं निशाकरकरोपमं त्रिपुरसुन्दरि श्रीप्रदे। गृहाण मुखमीक्षतुं मुकुरबिम्बमाविद्रुमै- र्विनिर्मितमघच्छिदे रतिकराम्बुजस्थायिनम्॥8॥

Amandatara-Mandaronmathita-Dugdhasindhudbhavam Nishakara-Karopamam Tripurasundari Shriprade | Grihana Mukham Ikshatum Mukura-Bimbam Avidrumai- Rvinirmitam Aghachchhide Rati-Karambuja-Sthayinam || 8 ||

Meaning: O Tripurasundari, destroyer of sins and giver of wealth! Accept this mirror to behold the beauty of your face. Rati, the queen, herself stands in your service holding it in her lotus hands. Corals are set all around this mirror. It emerged when the Ocean of Milk was churned with Mount Mandara, whirling with tremendous force, as the churning rod. It is as bright as the rays of the moon. ॥8॥

Verse 9

कस्तूरीद्रवचन्दनागुरुसुधाधाराभिराप्लावितं चञ्चच्चम्पकपाटलादिसुरभिद्रव्यैः सुगन्धीकृतम्। देवस्त्रीगणमस्तकस्थितमहारत्नादिकुम्भव्रजै- रम्भः शाम्भवि संभ्रमेण विमलं दत्तं गृहाणाम्बिके॥9॥

Kasturi-Drava-Chandanaguru-Sudhadharabhir Aplavitam Chanchach Champaka-Pataladi-Surabhidravyaih Sugandhikritam | Devastrigana-Mastakasthita-Maharatnadi-Kumbhavrajai- Rambhah Shambhavi Sambhramena Vimalam Dattam Grihanambike || 9 ||

Meaning: O Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shankara! Accept this pure water, poured swiftly from precious jewelled pitchers held on the heads of celestial maidens. It has been scented with fragrant substances such as champa and gulal, and it is steeped in streams of musk essence, sandalwood, aguru and nectar. ॥9॥

Verse 10

कह्लारोत्पलनागकेसरसरोजाख्यावलीमालती- मल्लीकैरवकेतकादिकुसुमै रक्ताश्वमारादिभिः। पुष्पैर्माल्यभरेण वै सुरभिणा नानारसस्रोतसा ताम्राम्भोजनिवासिनीं भगवतीं श्रीचण्डिकां पूजये॥10॥

Kahlarotpala-Nagakesara-Sarojakhyavali-Malati- Mallikairava-Ketakadi-Kusumai Raktashvamaradibhih | Pushpair Malyabharena Vai Surabhina Nanarasa-Srotasa Tamrambhoja-Nivasinim Bhagavatim Shri-Chandikam Pujaye || 10 ||

Meaning: I worship Goddess Shri Chandika, who dwells within the red lotus, with flowers such as kahlara, utpala, nagakesara, lotus, malati, mallika, kumuda, ketaki and red kaner (oleander), with fragrant garlands of flowers, and with streams of many kinds of essences. ॥10॥

Verse 11

मांसीगुग्गुलचन्दनागुरुरजः कर्पूरशैलेयजै- र्माध्वीकैः सह कुङ्कुमैः सुरचितैः सर्पिर्भिरामिश्रितैः। सौरभ्यस्थितिमन्दिरे मणिमये पात्रे भवेत् प्रीतये धूपोऽयं सुरकामिनीविरचितः श्रीचण्डिके त्वन्मुदे॥11॥

Mamsi-Guggula-Chandanaguru-Rajah Karpura-Shaileyajai- Rmadhvikaih Saha Kunkumaih Surachitaih Sarpirbhir Amishritaih | Saurabhya-Sthiti-Mandire Manimaye Patre Bhavet Pritaye Dhupo'yam Surakamini-Virachitah Shrichandike Tvanmude || 11 ||

Meaning: O Goddess Shri Chandika! May this divine incense (dhupa), prepared by the wives of the gods, increase your delight. This incense is placed in a jewelled vessel, the very home of fragrance; may it give you contentment. It has been carefully made by mixing jatamansi, guggul, sandalwood, aguru powder, camphor, shilajit, honey, kumkum and ghee. ॥11॥

Verse 12

घृतद्रवपरिस्फुरद्रुचिररत्नयष्ट्यान्वितो महातिमिरनाशनः सुरनितम्बिनीनिर्मितः। सुवर्णचषकस्थितः सघनसारवर्त्यान्वित- स्तव त्रिपुरसुन्दरि स्फुरति देवि दीपो मुदे॥12॥

Ghrita-Drava-Parisphurad-Ruchira-Ratna-Yashtyanvito Mahatimira-Nashanah Suranitambini-Nirmitah | Suvarna-Chashaka-Sthitah Saghanasara-Vartyanvita- Stava Tripurasundari Sphurati Devi Dipo Mude || 12 ||

Meaning: O Goddess Tripurasundari! For your delight, this lamp (dipa) is shining here. It burns with ghee; its stand has a beautiful jewelled stem, and celestial maidens have made it. This lamp has been lit in a golden cup. A wick has been placed in it along with camphor. It destroys even the heaviest darkness. ॥12॥

Verse 13

जातीसौरभनिर्भरं रुचिकरं शाल्योदनं निर्मलं युक्तं हिङ्गुमरीचजीरसुरभिद्रव्यान्वितैर्व्यञ्जनैः। पक्वान्नेन सपायसेन मधुना दध्याज्यसम्मिश्रितं नैवेद्यं सुरकामिनीविरचितं श्रीचण्डिके त्वन्मुदे॥13॥

Jati-Saurabha-Nirbharam Ruchikaram Shalyodanam Nirmalam Yuktam Hingu-Maricha-Jira-Surabhidravyanvitair Vyanjanaih | Pakvannena Sapayasena Madhuna Dadhy-Ajya-Sammishritam Naivedyam Surakamini-Virachitam Shrichandike Tvanmude || 13 ||

Meaning: O Goddess Shri Chandika! The wives of the gods have prepared this divine naivedya (food offering) for your delight. It includes clean, cooked rice of the aghani (winter) harvest, most delicious and scented with the fragrance of jasmine. There are also many kinds of dishes, tempered with fragrant spices such as asafoetida, pepper and cumin. It also includes various sweets, kheer, honey, curd and ghee. ॥13॥

Verse 14

लवङ्गकलिकोज्ज्वलं बहुलनागवल्लीदलं सजातिफलकोमलं सघनसारपूगीफलम्। सुधामधुरिमाकुलं रुचिररत्नपात्रस्थितं गृहाण मुखपङ्कजे स्फुरितमम्ब ताम्बूलकम्॥14॥

Lavanga-Kalikojjvalam Bahula-Nagavalli-Dalam Sajatiphala-Komalam Saghanasara-Pugiphalam | Sudha-Madhurimakulam Ruchira-Ratnapatra-Sthitam Grihana Mukhapankaje Sphuritam Amba Tambulakam || 14 ||

Meaning: Mother! Take into your mouth this divine tambula (betel), arranged on a beautiful jewelled plate. Its rolls (beedas) are pinned with clove buds, so they look very beautiful, and many betel leaves have been used in them. In all these rolls there are tender mace, camphor and betel nut. This tambula is full of the sweetness of nectar. ॥14॥

Verse 15

शरत्प्रभवचन्द्रमः स्फुरितचन्द्रिकासुन्दरं गलत्सुरतरङ्गिणीललितमौक्तिकाडम्बरम्। गृहाण नवकाञ्चनप्रभवदण्डखण्डोज्ज्वलं महात्रिपुरसुन्दरि प्रकटमातपत्रं महत्॥15॥

Sharat-Prabhava-Chandramah Sphurita-Chandrika-Sundaram Galat-Surataranginilalita-Mauktikadambaram | Grihana Nava-Kanchana-Prabhava-Danda-Khandojjvalam Maha-Tripurasundari Prakatam Atapatram Mahat || 15 ||

Meaning: O Mother Parvati, Maha Tripurasundari! This large and divine umbrella has appeared before you; accept it. It is as beautiful as the brilliant moonlight of autumn; the fringe of beautiful pearls hanging from it looks as though the stream of the heavenly river Ganga were falling from above. This umbrella looks most splendid because of its golden handle. ॥15॥

Verse 16

मातस्त्वन्मुदमातनोतु सुभगस्त्रीभिः सदाऽऽन्दोलितं शुभ्रं चामरमिन्दुकुन्दसदृशं प्रस्वेददुःखापहम्। सद्योऽगस्त्यवसिष्ठनारदशुकव्यासादिवाल्मीकिभिः स्वे चित्ते क्रियमाण एव कुरुतां शर्माणि वेदध्वनिः॥16॥

Matas Tvan Mudam Atanotu Subhagastribhih Sada''ndolitam Shubhram Chamaram Indu-Kunda-Sadrisham Prasveda-Duhkhapaham | Sadyo'gastya-Vasishtha-Narada-Shuka-Vyasadi-Valmikibhih Sve Chitte Kriyamana Eva Kurutam Sharmani Vedadhvanih || 16 ||

Meaning: Mother! May this white chamara (fly-whisk), waved constantly by the hands of beautiful women, bright like the moon and the kunda flower, and relieving the discomfort of perspiration, increase your delight. Besides this, may the sound of the Vedas that the great sages Agastya, Vasishtha, Narada, Shuka, Vyasa and others, and the sage Valmiki, chant in their own minds — that Vedic sound conceived in their hearts — increase your joy. ॥16॥

Verse 17

स्वर्गाङ्गणे वेणुमृदङ्गशङ्खभेरीनिनादैरुपगीयमाना। कोलाहलैराकलिता तवास्तु विद्याधरीनृत्यकला सुखाय॥17॥

Svargangane Venu-Mridanga-Shankha-Bheri-Ninadair Upagiyamana Kolahalair Akalita Tavastu Vidyadhari-Nritya-Kala Sukhaya || 17 ||

Meaning: May the music that plays in the courtyard of heaven with the sweet sounds of the flute, the mridanga, the conch and the bheri drum, filled with many kinds of joyful noise, and the art of dance performed by the Vidyadhari maidens, increase your happiness. ॥17॥

Verse 18

देवि भक्तिरसभावितवृत्ते प्रीयतां यदि कुतोऽपि लभ्यते। तत्र लौल्यमपि सत्फलमेकं जन्मकोटिभिरपीह न लभ्यम्॥18॥

Devi Bhaktirasa-Bhavita-Vritte Priyatam Yadi Kuto'pi Labhyate Tatra Laulyamapi Sat-Phalam Ekam Janmakotibhir Apiha Na Labhyam || 18 ||

Meaning: O Devi! If you find even a trace of devotion anywhere in this hymn in verse, steeped in the feeling of devotion to you, be pleased with that alone. Mother! The longing of the heart for devotion to you is the one true fruit of life; even after taking birth millions upon millions of times, it cannot be attained in this world without your grace. ॥18॥

Verse 19

एतैः षोडशभिः पद्यैरुपचारोपकल्पितैः। यः परां देवतां स्तौति स तेषां फलमाप्नुयात्॥19॥

Etaih Shodashabhih Padyair Upacharopakalpitaih | Yah Param Devatam Stauti Sa Tesham Phalam Apnuyat || 19 ||

Meaning: Whoever praises the supreme deity, Bhagavati Tripurasundari, with these sixteen verses in which the offerings are imagined, receives the fruit of offering those very services. ॥19॥
