Chandraghanta Mata

Maa Chandraghanta is the third form of Goddess Durga and is worshipped on the third day of Navratri. She represents courage, grace, protection, and the power to remove negativity from life. The name “Chandraghanta” comes from “Chandra,” meaning moon, and “Ghanta,” meaning bell, referring to the crescent-shaped bell on her forehead.

She is known for wearing a crescent moon on her forehead in the shape of a bell, which symbolizes bravery and divine energy. The other names of Chandraghanta Mata are Chandrakhanda, Chandika, and Rannchandi.

Iconography of Maa Chandraghanta

Goddess Chandraghanta is depicted as a radiant and powerful goddess with a golden complexion. She rides a fierce lion, which symbolizes bravery, determination, and strength. Her posture reflects readiness to fight evil while maintaining calmness and compassion.

She is shown with ten arms, holding various weapons like the Trishul (trident), Gada (mace), sword, bow, arrow, kamandalu (water pot), along with a lotus flower and a rosary. These weapons represent her ability to protect her devotees and destroy negative energies. One of her hands is always in a blessing position (Abhaya Mudra), assuring safety and fearlessness.

The most distinctive feature of Chandraghanta Mata is the half-moon that is shaped like a bell on her forehead. It is believed that the sound of this divine bell drives away evil forces and fills the surroundings with positivity and courage.

Maa Chandraghanta Story

The story of Maa Chandraghanta is deeply connected to Goddess Parvati and her marriage to Lord Shiva.

After taking birth as Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan (the King of the Himalayas), she performed intense penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Her devotion and dedication pleased Shiva, and he agreed to marry her.

However, when Lord Shiva arrived for the wedding, his appearance shocked everyone. He came in a fierce form riding a bull, adorned with ashes, snakes, and a garland of skulls. Seeing this, Parvati’s family and others present at the wedding became frightened and concerned.

To persuade Lord Shiva to soften his intense, fearsome appearance for their wedding, Goddess Parvati briefly assumed a powerful, fierce form herself, complete with ten arms and weapons, mirroring his energy before gently guiding him toward a calmer, more graceful presence. This fiery form of the goddess is worshipped as Maa Chadnraghanta.

Her transformation not only brought calmness to the situation but also showed her strength and ability to balance fierceness with compassion. After this, the marriage took place peacefully.

This Chandraghanta Mata story teaches us the importance of inner strength, patience, and the ability to handle difficult situations with wisdom and grace.
