The famous story of her birth is mentioned in the Mahabharat and the Bhagwat Purana, which talks about the churning of the ocean, or Samudra Manthan. According to the story, Gods and demons came together looking for divine treasures and started churning the ocean. Then, lord Lakshmi devi appeared from the ocean, calm and glowing, standing on a lotus.
