Karthigai Deepam is one of the most important Hindu festivals celebrated across Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India.

Pooja Vidhi and Its Significance
The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva, symbolising the victory of light over darkness. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Karthigai and holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for countless devotees worldwide.
What is Karthigai Deepam?
The word "Karthigai" refers to the Tamil month (roughly November-December), and "Deepam" means lamp or light. It celebrates the divine light of lord shiva and the triumph of righteousness.
People celebrate Karthigai Deepam by lighting lamps at their homes and temples, participating in prayers, meditating, and gathering with family and community members. The festival creates an atmosphere of devotion, peace, and spiritual awakening.
When is Karthigai Deepam Celebrated?
Karthigai Deepam is celebrated on the Krittika Nakshatra (star) in the Tamil month of Karthigai. In December 2025,
Krittika Nakshatra begins at 5:59 PM on December 3
Krittika Nakshatra ends at 2:54 PM on December 4
Therefore, the evening of December 3, from 5:59 PM to around 6:30 PM, is considered the most auspicious time to light lamps and invite divine blessings into your home.
The Meaning and Significance of Karthigai Deepam
The meaning goes beyond a simple festival. When a lamp is lit on this day, it signifies the burning away of negativity and illumination of the soul through spiritual knowledge.
Philosophically, it teaches that light (knowledge) always prevails over darkness (ignorance). Culturally, it strengthens the bonds within families and communities as people gather to celebrate together.
Why is Karthigai Deepam Celebrated?
Karthigai Deepam is celebrated for profound reasons rooted in two major Hindu legends.
- The first and most famous story tells of a cosmic argument between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma.
To settle this dispute, Lord Shiva appeared as a huge, infinite column of fire that stretched beyond the sky and deep below the earth. Neither Vishnu nor Brahma could find the beginning or end of this divine flame, demonstrating that God's true form is boundless.
- The second legend connects Karthigai Deepam to the birth of Lord Murugan. According to ancient texts, Murugan was formed from six sparks that emanated from Lord Shiva's third eye. These sparks were carried by the six Krittika maidens, who nurtured the divine child.
Lord Murugan then appeared as a radiant god with six faces, known as Aarumugam. The festival celebrates this sacred connection with the Krittika star and the divine child who brings courage, wisdom, and protection to his devotees.
Socially and culturally, the festival strengthens community bonds as families gather together, exchange greetings, and share meals. It promotes unity and brotherhood among people of different backgrounds. Environmentally, the use of natural oil lamps reflects a connection with nature and sustainability.
The festival also serves as a reminder of timeless values like truthfulness, compassion, and righteousness that remain relevant in today's world.
