Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Dussehra each year with such grandeur and emotion? It’s more than just the burning of Ravana’s ego, more than the victory of Shri Ram, and much more than a ritual. Dussehra is a cosmic reminder that truth always wins. Let’s explore more about significance, rituals and this year’s Dussehra date.
Significance of Dussehra (Restablishment Of Dharma)
Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, marks the victory of good over evil. During this period, Lord Ram killed Ravana and regained Dharma. The Auspicious day falls on the tenth day of the Ashwin month (September-October) as per the Hindu lunar calendar.
Moreover, Dussehra is about hope, It tells every broken heart that you will rise again, truth has its own timing, and it embraces each seeker to keep walking over the righteous path as Lord Shree Ram is within you. And, just like Shree Ram battled ten heads of Ravana, we too are meant to burn our inner demons, so we can rise further.

Dussehra 2025 Rituals
In earlier days, people used to worship their professions on Dussehra. Kshatriyas used to worship their weaponry, and intellectuals used to worship their pens to attract victory and prosperity. Let’s see what rituals are linked to this auspicious day.
Clean And Decorate Your House
Dussehra is a time for inner and outer cleansing. Clean your entire house properly and purify your temple space along with your house by sprinkling Ganges water. In addition, decorate your house with lights, flowers, and fragrance.
Worship Rituals
Wear clean clothes on this auspicious day and fill a few clay cups (Kulhad) with Sugar drops and puffed rice (Batashe and Kheel). Keep them on a tray in your temple altar and worship them with Akshat (unbroken rice) and Roli (Vermillion).
Keep an object on a tray that is associated with your work. For instance, if you are a student or a teacher, keep a notebook on a tray in front of the deity and pray for success and prosperity. For other professions, one can perform this ritual by worshiping a pen.
Read Dussehra Katha, or the story, and perform Aarti. At the end, offer the clay cups to the deity that you prepared and distribute them among your family members. Also, enjoy the positive vibes by watching Ramleela or listening to devotional music.
Perform Ravan Dahan
Close your eyes and visualize your negativities burning in divine fire. Journal them down and burn that paper. You can also take part in the burning of Ravan’s effigies by the community.
Feed the Needy or Offer Seva
Shri Ram was Maryada Purushottam (Virtuous man), a king who walked the path of Dharma. Follow his path by offering kindness and performing good karma.
Legend Associated With Dussehra Festival
The holy festival of Dussehra marks the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravan. According to the ancient epic Ramayana, Ravan, the ten-headed ruler of Lanka, abducted Goddess Sita (wife of Lord Rama). In his quest to rescue her, Rama, along with his brother Lakshman, the devoted Hanuman, and a Vanara (monkey) army, waged a mighty war against Ravan.
The war between Shree Ram and Ravana symbolized a cosmic fight between Dharma (righteousness) and Adharma (evil). It was on the tenth day, Lord Rama shot a divine arrow into Ravana's heart, ending his tyranny. Thus, Dussehra celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, and good over evil.
The ten heads of Ravana represent inner vices like ego, anger, greed, jealousy, attachment, fear, selfishness, hatred, lust, and injustice. Burning Ravana’s effigies on Dussehra symbolizes destroying these negative traits within ourselves.
