Diwali 2025 Hindu Calendar Date: From Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj

As the year draws closer to its end, Diwali 2025 arrives as a grand toast to joy, hope, and togetherness. It is a celebration of good over evil, light over darkness, and optimism over pessimism.

Diwali is one of the few festivals celebrated all across India, making every corner of the country glow with lights, music, and festivities. Firecrackers are an inseparable part of the celebration—you may think you can escape their sound, but during Diwali, it’s almost impossible!

“If you’re curious about the date, Diwali 2025 falls on Monday, October 20, and will be celebrated with joy across India.”

Diwali Celebration 2025: Dates and Muhurat

You often have witnessed frenzy where your mom or aunt starts cleaning the house inside out and waits for the Diwali season to come just to buy something they dream of all year. This shows us these aren't just a few days but actually a whole shopping season of anticipation!

But let's be honest and break down these so-called "few celebratory days" —

18th October 2025: Dhanteras

Dhanteras kicks off the 5-day Diwali festival, and this is when the shopping truly begins. The word “Dhan” refers to wealth and prosperity, while “Teras” means the thirteenth day of the lunar calendar. This is why Dhanteras is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha.

On this day, people buy new items for their homes, as it’s considered highly auspicious. Traditionally, buying gold, silver, or new utensils is believed to bring prosperity, good fortune, and blessings of Goddess Lakshmi into the household.

20th October 2025: Choti Diwali

Choti Diwali, also called Naraka Chaturdasi, is celebrated a day before the main Diwali. It is the day when people start decorating their houses with lights, and as the day unfolds, you'll feel the celebratory vibe surrounding you as almost every house begins to glow in colorful lights.

20th October 2025: Diwali

Note that Choti Diwali and Diwali will be celebrated on the same day, that is, 20th October 2025. The Laxmi Puja muhurat is from 7:00 pm to 8:18 pm. Moreover, Chopda Puja, Sharda Puja, and Kali Puja are going to be celebrated on this day only.

This day, the entire atmosphere transforms into pure euphoria everywhere you look; people are radiating joy, warmly embracing each other, and spreading infectious happiness while exchanging those beloved sweets (yes, soan papdi takes the crown!). But wait—as night falls, the real spectacle begins! The skies explode into a dazzling array of colors as fireworks paint the darkness, making this celebration utterly unforgettable!

21st October 2025: Diwali Snan and Diwali Devpuja

After the glittering celebrations of Diwali night, the next morning, 21st October 2025, marks Diwali Snan and Diwali Devpuja, a sacred day of renewal, gratitude, and devotion.

The day begins before sunrise with the Diwali Snan, a ritual bath believed to cleanse the body, mind, and soul of negativity, symbolizing a fresh start filled with divine energy. As the morning unfolds, devotees perform Devpuja, offering prayers to Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Ganesha. Homes glow with the warmth of diyas, while incense fills the air with devotion.

22nd October: Goverdhan Puja / Annakut

After the evening of celebration, we have one of the most auspicious festivals in Hindu mythology. It is Govardhan Puja; this day reminds us of the moment when Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Mountain to protect the residents of Vrindavan from the wrath of Lord Indra.
And well, not just that, it also marks the Gujarati New Year. So you can make out how super auspicious and winning a day it is.

There are few interesting rituals, such as making cow dung hillocks that are symbolic of Mount Govardhan and people bathing cows and bullocks and putting garlands on them. They literally exude the fragrance of a garden.

And also as part of this tradition, devotees prepare a grand feast with a wide variety of vegetarian dishes—sometimes as many as 56 items (Chhappan Bhog)—and offer it to Lord Krishna as a gesture of gratitude and devotion.

23rd October: Bhaidooj / Yama Dwitiya

This is one of the most cherished days of the year for the bond between brothers and sisters. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Yamaraj visited his sister Yamuna on this day. Delighted by his arrival, Yamuna welcomed him with a garland, applied a tilak on his forehead, and prayed for his well-being.

The same ritual is repeated where sisters put a tilak, give a coconut, and pray for the longevity of their brother.

Conclusion

Diwali is more than just a festival—it’s a five-day marathon where devotion meets decoration, shopping meets snacking, and families meet… well, a lot of cleaning! From buying gold on Dhanteras to the sibling negotiations on Bhai Dooj, every day has its own drama and charm that adds to the sparkle of the Festival of Lights.

Diwali is that magical week when everyone suddenly becomes an interior designer, electrician, and chef—all at once. As India lights up with millions of diyas this October, Diwali 2025 promises not just prosperity but also endless sweets and memories brighter than the fireworks.
