Mythological Significance of Ujjain

There are several legends associated with the origin of the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain. One popular story is mentioned below.

According to the legend, a Brahmin named Vedpriya lived in the ancient city of Avanti (present-day Ujjain). He installed a Shivling in his home and worshipped Lord Shiva according to religious rituals.

The Brahmin had four sons — Devpriya, Priyamedh, Sanskrit, and Suvrat. All four sons were wise, devoted, and obedient.

At that time, a demon named Dushan received a boon from Lord Brahma that made him invincible. After gaining this power, Dushan started troubling people and reached Ujjain with his army. He tortured the Brahmins living there.

Despite facing difficulties, the four brothers remained fearless and continued worshipping Lord Shiva.

Seeing this, Dushan raised his sword to kill the four brothers. But as soon as the demon moved forward, Lord Shiva appeared before him.

Lord Shiva told Dushan, “I have appeared in the form of Kaal (time/death) for your destruction.” With his powerful roar, Lord Shiva destroyed the demon.

After this, Lord Shiva was pleased with the four brothers and asked them to seek a boon. They requested Lord Shiva to grant them liberation and remain in Ujjain forever to protect devotees.

Accepting their wish, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a Shivling in Ujjain. Today, this sacred Shivling is worshipped as the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.

Religious Significance of Ujjain

Ujjain is famous for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in India. This holy bathing festival is organised once every twelve years when Jupiter enters the Leo zodiac sign (Simha Rashi).

The sacred bath in the Shipra River begins on the full moon day of the Chaitra month and continues until the full moon day of Vaishakh month.

The Kumbh Mela is organised at four sacred locations in India — Prayagraj, Nashik, Haridwar, and Ujjain.

Among these, the Kumbh Mela held in Nashik and Ujjain is known as Simhastha Kumbh.

Famous Places to Visit in Ujjain

The most important attraction in Ujjain is the Mahakaleshwar Temple, where devotees get the opportunity to worship one of Lord Shiva’s twelve Jyotirlingas.

Apart from this, Shri Bade Ganesh Temple and Mangalnath Temple are also important religious sites in Ujjain.

Mahakaleshwar Temple

The Mahakaleshwar Temple of Ujjain is counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The religious significance of this temple is described in detail in various Hindu scriptures.

It is believed that devotees who have darshan of the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga become free from the fear of untimely death.

Lord Mahakal is also considered the supreme deity and guardian of Ujjain.

Shri Bade Ganesh Temple

Located near the Mahakaleshwar Temple, Shri Bade Ganesh Temple houses a huge and artistic idol of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.

This magnificent idol was created by the famous scholar Late Pandit Narayan Ji Vyas.

The temple complex also includes several other sacred idols, including a Panchmukhi Hanuman idol made of seven metals (Saptadhatu) and idols of Lord Krishna and Mother Yashoda.

Mangalnath Temple

Located in Ujjain, Mangalnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Mangal (Mars).

Special prayers and rituals are performed here to reduce the negative effects of planetary influences. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Mangal was born in Ujjain, which makes this temple highly significant.

It is believed that this temple is centuries old. Every Tuesday, a large number of devotees visit this temple for worship.
