What Have You Got to Do With Mercury

Mercury is the smallest planet of our Solar System and the closest to the Sun. This planet can be seen in the morning and evening as a shining star and is called ‘Budh’ in Vedic astrology. The planet was named Mercury, after the ancient Roman God of commerce and messenger of the Gods.

According to some ancient Hindu scriptures, Mercury is the son of Moon and Rohini(Moon’s wife), while according to others, Moon seduced Tara(Brihaspati’s[Jupiter} wife) and ‘Budh’ is born from her. Moon, being the father, is friendly with Mercury, but Mercury is in conflict with Moon since Moon had seduced his mother. Lord Brahma named Mercury, ‘Budha’ because of the intelligent nature of this planet.

Experiencing a mental block?

An Unfavorable positioning of Mercury in your birth chart might be the reason. Consult our expert astrologers for the best remedies and solutions.

Being a neutral planet, Mercury changes according to its placement in a sign and house but being nearest to the Sun, it is restless, quick changing and many times retrograde. Because of this the term ‘Mercurial’ is used to denote unpredictability or someone who is clever, lively and quick.

The planet is considered benefic, but sometimes turns malefic when both Rahu and Mercury are in their auspicious houses in the native’s birth chart. And when placed alone in any house, the native wastes time running here and there.

Mercury represents the relation with sisters, daughters and paternal aunt. When the planet is inauspicious in native’s birth chart, it ruins relationship with them.

Mercury is friendly with Sun, Venus and Rahu, enemy with the Moon and neutral with Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Ketu. The planet is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces. Mercury is dual natured and rules two Zodiac signs; Gemini and Virgo.

The metal for Mercury is lead, precious stone is Emerald and element is Earth.

The colour green is associated with Mercury, for example, green cardamom, green vegetables, and fruits, green clothes, moong dal etc .

The planet rules our skin, ear, lungs and nervous system and gives diseases like giddiness, skin problems, and an obsessive nature. A weak Mercury can cause venereal diseases.

This Roman God of Commerce represents the fields related to commerce, trade, accounts, banking, mathematics, and computers. Mercury is also the planet of communication and so, writers, media persons, lecturers, salesmen, astrologers, brokers, and businessmen, have well-placed and strong Mercury in their horoscope. A strong Mercury in a native’s chart, makes them logical thinkers who have the excellence of reasoning and sharp thinking but with the downside of inborn anxiety and indecisiveness.

Since this planet affects our lives in many ways, natives who have an inauspicious Mercury should do the following remedies-

  1. Keep water at the bedside during night and pour this on a Peepul tree in the morning.
  2. To strengthen a debilitated Mercury, avoid consuming alcohol, eggs or meat.
  3. In the morning, after a bath, offer water to the Sun daily.
  4. A silver chain or a copper coin can be worn around the neck and girls can get their nose pierced to reduce the ill-effects of Mercury.

Chant “Om Bum Budhay Namah” 108 times daily in the morning.

Traditionally Yours,
