Mythological Story of Shani Shingnapur

According to a popular legend, once there was heavy rainfall in the village of Shingnapur, causing severe flooding. Due to the rising water levels, all villagers moved to a higher place for safety.

During this time, one person noticed a divine stone floating in the floodwaters. When the water level decreased, he found the same stone near a tree. Seeing the stone, greed arose in his mind, and he thought that he could earn money by selling it.

With this intention, he tried to break the divine stone. However, the moment he struck the stone, blood started flowing from it. Seeing this miraculous event, the person became frightened and rushed back to the village to tell everyone about what had happened.

After hearing his story, all villagers went to the spot where the stone was located. To confirm the incident, they asked the person to strike the stone again. As soon as he hit the stone, blood started flowing from it once again. Everyone was amazed and confused about what should be done with the divine stone.

The villagers decided to return home and think about it the next day. That night, Lord Shani appeared in the person's dream while riding a horse and said, “I am Lord Shani. Bring this stone to your village and install it there. Your village will always remain prosperous and protected.”

The next day, the person shared his dream with all the villagers. They returned to the stone and tried to lift it, but the stone did not move even slightly. After trying for the entire day, everyone became tired and returned home.

That night, Lord Shani appeared in the same person’s dream again and explained the method to bring the stone to the village. The next day, following Lord Shani’s instructions, the villagers successfully brought the sacred stone to the village and installed it.

Since then, all villagers started worshipping the Shani Shila. It is believed that after this, no disaster ever affected the village.

The Shani Temple of Shingnapur is considered a remarkable and unique place of worship. It is the only temple where Lord Shani is not represented by an idol but by a sacred stone placed under the open sky.

The temple does not have any roof. The Shani Shila is approximately 5 feet 9 inches long and 1 foot 6 inches wide.
