Mythological Significance of Pushkar

The origin of Pushkar is mentioned in the Hindu religious scripture Padma Purana. According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Brahma performed a Yagna (sacred fire ritual) in Pushkar. Due to its religious importance, Pushkar is considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. The town is especially famous because it houses the ancient temple of Lord Brahma.

There is also a popular legend explaining why the only temple of Lord Brahma is located in Pushkar. According to the legend, once Lord Brahma decided to perform a Yagna. He wanted to conduct this ritual at the most auspicious time. However, his wife Goddess Saraswati, whose presence was considered essential during the Yagna, was delayed and asked Lord Brahma to wait.

Being upset by the delay, Lord Brahma married a cowherd woman named Gayatri and seated her beside him during the Yagna. Lord Brahma selected the central region in the south of Pushkar as the place for the ritual. At this sacred site, he created three holy pilgrimage areas known as Jyeshtha Pushkar, Madhya Pushkar, and Kanishtha Pushkar.

All the gods and sages attended Lord Brahma’s Yagna. The sages established their ashrams near the Yagna site. Lord Shiva also arrived in the form of Kapaladhari (one who carries a skull).

When Goddess Saraswati arrived and saw someone else sitting in her place, she became angry and cursed Lord Brahma. She declared that people on Earth would forget Lord Brahma and would never worship him. However, after the prayers of other gods, she softened her curse and said that Lord Brahma would only be worshipped in Pushkar.

This is the reason why, apart from Pushkar, there is no other major temple dedicated to Lord Brahma anywhere in the world.

Famous Places to Visit in Pushkar

The ancient temples of Pushkar were destroyed during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Apart from the Brahma Temple, the major attractions of Pushkar include Pushkar Lake, Pushkar Fair, and camel races. Several permanent ghats have been built along the banks of Pushkar Lake. These ghats were constructed by wealthy rulers and nobles of the Rajputana states.

Brahma Temple

Pushkar is a town filled with religious beliefs and mythological significance. The main attraction here is the Brahma Temple. The temple is built using marble stones and decorated with silver coins. The names of donors are engraved on these silver coins. The names of donors are also inscribed on the temple walls.

Inside the temple, a golden turtle is placed on the floor. A small idol of Goddess Gayatri and a four-faced idol of Lord Brahma, known as Chaumukhi, are installed in the temple. The entrance of the temple is made of marble, while the door is made of silver.

Pushkar Lake

Pushkar Lake is famous across the world for its spiritual significance and natural beauty. According to Hindu beliefs, Pushkar Lake is as old as creation itself. It has been considered a sacred pilgrimage site since ancient times.

There are 52 ghats around the lake where devotees take a holy dip to seek blessings and spiritual purification.

Pushkar Fair

According to Hindu traditions, the Pushkar Fair begins on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the Kartik month and continues until the full moon day (Purnima). The fair is especially known for animal trading, particularly camels and livestock.

During the fair, various items related to animal care, traditional clothing, and women’s jewellery and accessories are available at one place. The vibrant atmosphere of the fair attracts thousands of tourists every year.

Camel Race

The camel race held during the Pushkar Fair is extremely popular among animal lovers and tourists. Every evening, Rajasthani folk dances and musical performances are organised, attracting large crowds.

How to Reach Pushkar

Pushkar can be reached by road, rail, and air.

By Air

If you are travelling by air, you need to reach Jaipur Airport, which is the nearest airport to Pushkar. Apart from this, helipads are available at Ghughra in Ajmer and Devnagar in Pushkar, where visitors arriving by helicopter can land.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Pushkar Railway Station. However, the most convenient option is to reach Ajmer Junction, which is well connected with major cities across India. From Ajmer, Pushkar can be easily reached by road.

By Road

Pushkar is well connected by road with Jaipur and Ajmer. Regular buses and taxis operate from different parts of Rajasthan to Pushkar. The city is also connected to major metropolitan cities of India through road networks.
