Mumbai – The Land of Mumba Devi and Siddhivinayak Temple

Located on the western coast of India, Mumbai is the financial capital of the country. Along with its commercial importance, the city also holds immense religious significance. The city itself is named after Goddess Mumba Devi, the presiding deity of Mumbai.

Situated along the Arabian Sea, Mumbai has witnessed several historical events over centuries. Let us explore the history of Mumbai and its major religious and tourist attractions.

History of Mumbai

The original inhabitants of Mumbai were the Koli community, who are believed to have established settlements in this region. However, the history of the city dates back thousands of years.

According to archaeological evidence, Mumbai existed during the Stone Age. Some remains discovered in the Kandivali region of North Mumbai indicate the presence of human settlements during that period.

Written evidence of human habitation on these islands dates back to around 250 BCE, when the region was known as Heptanesia.

Later, during the 3rd century BCE, the islands came under the control of the Maurya Empire. After the Mauryas, the region was ruled by the Satavahana dynasty. Following the Satavahanas, the Silhara dynasty controlled the city until 1342.

Later, the ruler of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah, took control of Mumbai from the Silhara rulers. In the 15th century, the Portuguese captured the region from Gujarat.

In 1661, after the marriage of King Charles II of England with the Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza, Mumbai was handed over to the British Empire as part of the dowry.

After coming under British rule, Mumbai became an important administrative and commercial center. In 1687, the East India Company shifted its headquarters from Surat to Mumbai, making it the center of the Bombay Presidency.

Several development projects were started in the city during British rule. One of these was the Hornby Vellard Project, which helped in the development of the region.

In 1853, India's first passenger railway line was established between Mumbai and Thane, marking a historic milestone in Indian transportation.

Even today, many iconic British-era buildings stand proudly in Mumbai, including:

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus
  • Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Headquarters
