Kedarnath – The Sacred Abode of Lord Shiva

Uttarakhand is rightly known as Dev Bhoomi (Land of Gods). Located in the lap of the Himalayas, this state is blessed with breathtaking natural beauty and is home to numerous Hindu pilgrimage sites and sacred temples.

Due to the famous Kedarnath Temple of Lord Shiva and many other holy shrines, Uttarakhand holds great religious significance among Hindus. Kedarnath is as sacred and spiritually important as Badrinath. It is also home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The Shivling here has a unique triangular shape, which makes it different from other Shivlings.

Mythological Story of Kedarnath

The story of Kedarnath Jyotirlinga is mentioned in the Shiva Purana. According to this legend, two brothers named Nara and Narayana used to worship and meditate upon Lord Shiva by creating a sacred idol of Shiva from earthly materials.

Pleased with their devotion and penance, Lord Shiva appeared before them and asked them to seek a boon. The two brothers requested Lord Shiva to permanently reside in this region for the welfare of humanity.

Accepting their prayers, Lord Shiva established himself here in the form of a Jyotirlinga.

It is believed that during that period, this region was ruled by King Kedar, who was also a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Upon the king’s request, Lord Shiva accepted the responsibility of protecting the Kedar region, and since then, he came to be known as Kedarnath.

Kedarnath and the Pandavas

Another popular legend from the Mahabharata period is associated with the Pandavas.

After winning the battle of Mahabharata, the Pandavas wanted to free themselves from the sin of killing their own relatives. They believed that only Lord Shiva could liberate them from this guilt. However, Lord Shiva was displeased with them and did not wish to meet them.

The Pandavas searched for Lord Shiva in Kashi, but could not find him there. They then followed him towards the Himalayas.

To avoid giving them darshan, Lord Shiva disappeared and settled in the Kedarnath region. However, the Pandavas were determined to receive his blessings and continued searching until they reached Kedarkhand.

According to the legend, Lord Shiva took the form of a bull (Nandi) and hid among other animals. The Pandavas became suspicious and decided to identify him.

Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, expanded his body into a gigantic form and placed his feet across two mountains. All the animals passed underneath, but the bull representing Lord Shiva refused to move.

Bhima realized that the bull was none other than Lord Shiva and tried to catch him. As the bull started disappearing into the ground, Bhima grabbed the triangular hump on its back.

Impressed by the devotion and determination of the Pandavas, Lord Shiva appeared before them, blessed them, and freed them from their sins. Since then, Lord Shiva has been worshipped at Shri Kedarnath Temple.

Places to Visit in Kedarnath

The Kedarnath Valley is famous for its divine beauty and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. However, the spiritual experience of visiting Kedarnath is truly unique. The region has several religiously significant places that attract devotees from all over the world.

Kedarnath Temple

The world-famous Kedarnath Temple is the main reason behind the popularity of this region. The temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya and houses a naturally formed triangular-shaped Shivling, which is counted among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

The temple is built in the Katyuri architectural style and is believed to be more than 1,000 years old. It is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in India.

Shankaracharya Samadhi

It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya attained samadhi here at the age of 32.

According to traditions, Adi Shankaracharya visited Kedarnath Temple during the 8th century. After having darshan of Lord Shiva, he is believed to have taken his final samadhi at this sacred place. The Shankaracharya Samadhi is an important spiritual attraction for devotees.

Vasuki Tal

Located around 8 km from Kedarnath, Vasuki Tal is a popular religious and natural attraction. This beautiful high-altitude lake is surrounded by the Himalayan mountains, adding to its charm.

To reach Vasuki Tal, visitors have to cross challenging routes near the Chaturangi and Vasuki glaciers. Despite the difficult journey, many devotees and travelers undertake this path to experience the divine beauty of the place.

Guptkashi

For pilgrims visiting Kedarnath, Guptkashi is another important destination. The town is home to several ancient temples, including:

The Ardhanarishwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and represents him in a half-male and half-female form. The Vishwanath Temple also contains idols depicting various forms of Lord Shiva.

Gaurikund

Gaurikund is one of the major attractions near Kedarnath. It has an ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati.

According to local legends, Goddess Parvati performed intense penance here to attain Lord Shiva as her husband.

Gaurikund is also famous for its natural hot water spring, which is believed to have medicinal properties. Devotees believe that bathing in its waters helps cleanse sins and purify the soul.
