Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha

In ancient times, there lived a wealthy merchant who had seven sons, seven daughters-in-law, and one daughter. During the festival of Diwali, his daughter returned to her parental home from her in-laws' house.

As preparations for Diwali began, all seven daughters-in-law went to the forest to collect clay for plastering their homes, and the merchant's daughter accompanied them. While digging the earth, she accidentally struck the burrow of a porcupine (Syahi) with her tool, unintentionally killing one of its young.

Angered by the incident, the mother porcupine cursed the merchant's daughter, saying, "I will bind your womb, and you will never bear children."

Frightened by the curse, the merchant's daughter pleaded with each of her sisters-in-law to accept the curse on her behalf. The youngest daughter-in-law, moved by compassion, willingly accepted the curse in place of her sister-in-law.

Afterward, every child born to the youngest daughter-in-law died on the seventh day after birth. When she had lost seven sons in this heartbreaking manner, she sought guidance from learned priests to understand the cause of her suffering.

The priests advised her to serve the Surhi Cow, a sacred and divine cow believed to possess spiritual powers. Following their advice, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to serving the cow. Pleased with her sincere devotion, the Surhi Cow agreed to take her to the mother porcupine so she could seek forgiveness.

On their journey, they stopped to rest. While resting, the youngest daughter-in-law noticed a snake approaching the nest of Garuda's bird to attack its chicks. Without hesitation, she killed the snake and saved the young birds.

When the mother bird returned and saw blood scattered around the nest, she mistakenly believed that the woman had killed her chicks and attacked her. The youngest daughter-in-law explained that she had actually saved them from the snake. Realizing the truth, the grateful bird escorted both the woman and the Surhi Cow safely to the mother porcupine.

The porcupine was deeply pleased by the youngest daughter-in-law's kindness, devotion, and selfless nature. She lifted the curse and blessed her with seven sons and seven daughters-in-law, ensuring that her family would flourish with happiness and prosperity.

By the grace of the porcupine's blessing, the youngest daughter-in-law's home was once again filled with children and future generations.

The word "Ahoi" is often interpreted as "protection from misfortune or the prevention of calamity." Just as the youngest daughter-in-law overcame great adversity through compassion, faith, and selfless service, devotees believe that observing the Ahoi Ashtami Vrat with sincerity brings divine blessings, protects children, and removes obstacles from family life.
