The Story of Guru Purnima: Why We Bow to Our Teachers on This Day

Ever felt curious about the reason why an entire festival is celebrated to express gratitude towards your teachers? That is what Guru Purnima is all about, and it is one of the most emotional stories in India's spiritual heritage. It occurs on the full moon day of the Hindu month Ashadha and typically takes place in the month of June or July. Also, it is the day when disciples throughout India pay tribute to the gurus who enlightened them.

Those who have been fortunate enough to come across some teachers or guides who have completely transformed their outlook towards life certainly understand the importance of this day. Let us unfold the history of Guru Purnima, one piece at a time.

Where the Story of Guru Purnima Begins

There are two main variations of the story of Guru Purnima, and both of them are equally important.

In the first version, we find ourselves in the mountains, where Lord Shiva was sitting in absolute silence as Adi Yogi, the first yogi ever. People from everywhere came because of the sheer power of his presence.

However, the following is the catch here. All of them could not tolerate the silence of their guru. They needed some words, instructions, and quick answers from him, but Adi Yogi gave nothing of that. One by one, they left as they did not have any tolerance towards a guru who was teaching them silently instead of verbally.

However, seven disciples remained there. Try to imagine this scenario for a while. Amongst a large number of people, only seven disciples stayed there. They sat there, observed him, and waited for ages without asking anything in return from him. Gradually, something within them changed. Their restlessness disappeared, and their minds became so calm that they could take the wisdom of their guru.

After many days passed, on a full moon night, he saw that now these seven were ready. Then he faced south, and at that moment, he became the Adi Guru for humans and gave them the science of yoga. Those seven disciples became the Saptarishis, the seven legendary sages who carried this knowledge forward into the world. That transmission is remembered every year as Guru Purnima, and it is really the heart of the story of Guru Purnima as it is told in yogic tradition.

The Second Thread of Guru Purnima: Sage Vyasa and Vyasa Purnima

Another version of the story of Guru Purnima revolves around sage Veda Vyasa. He is considered to be the author of the Mahabharata and the Puranas, in addition to the organization of the four Vedas, which is indeed an enormous task. This enormous task that Veda Vyasa did by putting into writing ancient traditions earned him another name for the festival known as Vyasa Purnima in many places in India.

As compared to the story of Adi Yogi that appears rather otherworldly and mystical, the story about Veda Vyasa appears to be much more tangible. It glorifies a great effort made by a human being to collect all pieces of knowledge available, arrange them, and pass them down to future generations in order for ordinary people like us to be able to use them in the future. Isn't it amazing that there is a festival celebrating the stories of both kinds?

What the Story of Guru Purnima Really Teaches Us

Now comes the million-dollar question for all of us to ponder. Why were only seven individuals able to gain knowledge from Adi Yogi out of all the others who had gathered there? The reason behind this phenomenon is readiness. There are limitations to how much one can teach. But it ultimately depends on how ready the person is to accept that knowledge. Imagine planting seeds in soil. No matter how good the seed may be, it cannot sprout in barren land.

In order to grow, the land must be prepared through patience and discipline first. And that is precisely what those seven disciples did before any form of learning could commence. This is the essential truth hidden in the story of Guru Purnima.

How People Celebrate Guru Purnima

On Guru Purnima Day, devotees visit their Gurus and give them some offerings in the form of flowers or presents as a mark of reverence either personally or silently in memory of their Guru if he/she is no longer living. There is a lot of cleaning done at homes and ashrams and reading of scriptures, and people prefer meditating on the occasion rather than indulging in celebrations.

Why the Story of Guru Purnima Still Matters

There is no requirement for you to be a monk in the Himalayas to appreciate the significance of the story of Guru Purnima. Look at your own life. Your school teacher who had faith in you even when you lacked self-belief, your mentor who pointed out your errors but did not judge you, or perhaps a family member who advised you on making a difficult decision—all of them are also gurus in their own right. All that Guru Purnima does is give you one dedicated day to thank them.

Next time you see the full moon in Ashadha, think of the seven persistent seekers, think of Vyasa editing the Vedas by hand, and think of how everything that you know is because of someone else.

Every Purnima has its own spiritual significance. From Chaitra Purnima to Kartik Purnima and Sharad Purnima, explore the complete list of Purnima dates, tithi timings, and rituals for the year.
