Ganesh Laxmi Relation - The Mythological Story
According to the scriptures, one day Laxmi Ji and her husband Lord Vishnu were having a conversation. She apparently was bragging about her wealth and powers and said that she is the only Goddess who is worthy of being worshiped.
Reason—She said that by her grace, a person can get all the happiness, good fortune, and wealth.
Lord Vishnu heard all this, stayed calm, and reduced her arrogant attitude by saying, "She has all the qualities, no doubt about it, but she hasn’t felt the joy of being a mother." And he believes that the joy of motherhood is the most important thing in the world.
Hearing this, Goddess Laxmi became disheartened and made a visit to her friend Goddess Parvati, who is the sister of Lord Vishnu. She expressed her distress, and after listening to her, Parvati Ji asked how she could help her.
Laxmi Ji responded by saying, “You have two sons (Ganesha and Kartikeya), and giving me one of them will help me get the grace of motherhood.”

In reply, Goddess Parvati explained, her younger son Kartikeya has six mouths (faces) and because of that, he must be fed regularly, which is a hassle for sure. Her elder son, Ganesha, is very naughty and must be kept under constant watch; otherwise, he’ll ruin everything.
With that, she said, Goddess Laxmi can’t stay in one place for a long time, so how is she going to take care of her son?
By hearing this, Goddess Lakshmi said to her, “I’ll keep your sons close to my heart and shower all my love on them, whether it’s Kartikeya or Ganesha. I can take care of both of them. All the servants of heaven will serve them day and night, so please give me one of them as my adopted child.”
Maa Parvati knew both her sons very well, so she gave Lord Ganesha to Goddess Lakshmi as her adopted son.

Goddess Lakshmi became very happy and said to Goddess Parvati, “From today onwards, I’m giving all my accomplishments, luxury, and prosperity to my son Ganesha. Also, Riddhi and Siddhi, the daughters of Lord Brahma, who are like my own daughters, will soon be married to him, and I give you my word on this.”
“I will fulfill all the desires of Ganesha. In all three Lokas, whoever doesn’t worship Lord Ganesha or speaks ill of him, I will stay miles away from that person. Whenever my worship is performed, Lord Ganesha’s worship will be a must. Whoever doesn’t worship Shri Ganesha along with me will never receive Shree or my blessings.”
By listening to this, Maa Parvati became very happy and handed over her son Ganesha to Lakshmi Ji.
And that is why, during Deepawali Pujan or Lakshmi Pujan, the worship of Lord Ganesha is considered essential.

Final Words
This story beautifully explains why, during Diwali, the festival of wealth and light, Lord Ganesha is worshiped along with Goddess Lakshmi.
When Lakshmi Ji adopted Ganesha as her son and declared that her blessings would reach only those who worship him first, it became a divine tradition. Since then, every Diwali, devotees begin their prayers with Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, before invoking Maa Lakshmi, the bringer of prosperity.
Together, they symbolize that true wealth comes only when wisdom and devotion walk hand in hand, lighting our homes and hearts with abundance and harmony.
