Kansa's Tyranny and the Prophecy

In the city of Mathura, a cruel king named Kansa ruled, who deeply loved his younger sister, Princess Devaki. When Devaki married the noble Vasudeva, Kansa himself drove their wedding chariot. But a divine voice soon thundered a warning: Devaki's eighth son would cause Kansa's death.

Terrified, Kansa moved to kill Devaki on the spot, and only Vasudeva's promise to hand over every child born to them spared her life. Kansa imprisoned the couple and, over the years, killed each of their first seven newborns to defy the prophecy.

The Miraculous Birth

When Devaki carried her eighth child, Lord Vishnu himself appeared before the couple, revealing that he would be born as their son and instructing Vasudeva to carry the newborn to Gokul and exchange him with a baby girl born to his friends Nanda and Yashoda.

At midnight, Lord Krishna was born inside the prison cell, and divine miracles unfolded: the guards fell asleep, the doors swung open on their own, and Vasudeva's chains simply fell away.

Carrying the infant across a raging, storm-swollen River Yamuna, Vasudeva watched the waters part before him, never rising past his shoulders, while the great serpent Shesha spread its hood overhead to shield the child from the pouring rain.

The Exchange and the Goddess's Warning

In Gokul, Vasudeva swapped Lord Krishna for Yashoda's newborn daughter and returned to the cell, where the chains reappeared, and the guards woke as though nothing had happened. When Kansa learned of the birth, he rushed to kill the child, but as he seized her, she slipped from his grasp and transformed into Goddess Yogamaya, declaring that the one destined to end his reign was already safe in Gokul.

Lord Krishna grew up in Vrindavan, cherished for his playful, miraculous deeds, and years later returned to Mathura to defeat Kansa, freeing his parents and restoring righteousness, the enduring symbol of good triumphing over evil at the heart of Janmashtami.
