Story of Banke Bihari Ji

Many stories related to Lord Krishna, the beloved son of Nanda, are famous among devotees. One such popular story is associated with Banke Bihari Ji.

Once, there was a king named Thakur Bhupendra Singh, who ruled a princely state near Bharatpur. He spent most of his life in luxury and worldly pleasures. In the name of religion, he used to organise Ramayana and Bhagwat Katha recitations and considered that enough.

Thakur Bhupendra Singh’s wife was a devoted follower of Lord Krishna. Every year, she visited Vrindavan to worship Shri Banke Bihari Ji.

Once, she prepared beautiful clothes for Banke Bihari Ji. When Thakur came to know about these clothes, he wanted to hide them. Taking advantage of an opportunity, he secretly removed the clothes made for Lord Krishna.

His wife was unaware of this and continued waiting for the clothes to reach Vrindavan. Thakur decided to personally inform her about the incident and went to Vrindavan.

When he reached there, his wife took him directly to Banke Bihari Ji’s temple. As soon as Thakur stood before the deity, he was shocked to see that Banke Bihari Ji was wearing the same clothes that he had hidden.

His wife told him that their son had brought these clothes to the temple the previous night and returned after offering them.

Hearing this, Thakur was completely astonished. That night, Banke Bihari Ji appeared in Thakur’s dream and said:

“Why are you surprised about how these clothes reached me? Anyone who wants to come to me cannot be stopped by any power in the world. It was not just the clothes — look at yourself, even you have reached Vrindavan.”

After hearing these words, Thakur woke up. From that moment onwards, he surrendered himself completely to the devotion of Banke Bihari Ji.

Banke Bihari Temple

Banke Bihari Temple is one of the most famous temples of Vrindavan.

The word “Banke” means bent in three places, representing the posture of Lord Krishna while playing the flute. Lord Krishna’s idol in this temple is present in the same divine posture.

The temple was built in 1860 and features beautiful Rajasthani architectural design. It is believed that this divine image of Banke Bihari Ji was discovered by Swami Haridas Ji in Nidhivan.

Swami Haridas Ji was a great devotee of Lord Krishna and belonged to the Nimbarka tradition. The temple was rebuilt in 1921 by the followers of Swami Haridas Ji.

Shri Radha Raman Temple

Located near Nidhivan, Shri Radha Raman Temple was built in 1542 at the request of Gopal Bhatta Goswami.

Apart from its spiritual importance, the temple is also famous for its excellent craftsmanship and architecture.

The temple holds great significance in the Gaudiya Vaishnav tradition. Here, Lord Krishna is worshipped in his beautiful small form along with Goddess Radha.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Rangनाथ (Rangaji) and was completed in 1851.

The entrance of the temple reflects Rajput architectural style. The temple represents Lord Vishnu reclining on the bed of Sheshnag.

The temple complex includes a beautiful pond and a scenic garden. It is also famous for the Brahmotsav festival held during March and April, locally known as the Rath Mela. This festival continues for ten days.
