Mythological Stories Related to Rishikesh

Many religious stories are associated with Rishikesh. One of the most famous legends is related to Lord Shiva consuming poison during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean).

According to Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan, the first thing to emerge from the ocean was a deadly poison called Halahala. The intensity of this poison was so powerful that both gods and demons started becoming unconscious. They prayed to Lord Shiva for protection.

Accepting their prayers, Lord Shiva, the God of Gods, held the poison in his palm and drank it. However, he did not allow the poison to pass below his throat. Due to the effect of this deadly poison, Lord Shiva’s throat turned blue. This is why Lord Shiva is known as Neelkanth.

It is believed that the place where Lord Shiva consumed the poison is located in Rishikesh. The famous Neelkanth Mahadev Temple stands at this sacred location today.

Another legend connects Rishikesh with the Ramayana era, which further enhances its religious importance. It is believed that during his exile, Lord Rama spent time in the forests of Rishikesh. During this period, his younger brother Lakshmana built a rope bridge using jute to cross the River Ganga.

According to beliefs, a bridge was later constructed at the same place where Lakshmana built the rope bridge, and it is now known as Lakshman Jhula.

Lakshman Jhula

Connecting one bank of the River Ganga to the other, Lakshman Jhula is one of the most iconic landmarks of Rishikesh.

According to historical records, this suspension bridge was constructed in 1939. As per religious beliefs, during the Ramayana period, Lakshmana created a rope bridge at this location to cross the River Ganga.

Even today, visitors experience a slight movement while standing on the bridge. This 450-feet-long bridge offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes. The temples of Lakshmana and Raghunath Ji are located near the bridge.

Another famous bridge, Ram Jhula, is also situated nearby. It is built between Sivananda Ashram and Swarg Ashram and is also known as Sivananda Jhula.

Triveni Ghat

Triveni Ghat is one of the most important bathing ghats in Rishikesh. According to Hindu beliefs, the sacred rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati meet at this place, which is why it is called Triveni.

Every morning, numerous devotees take a holy dip in the River Ganga here. From this point, the River Ganga changes its direction towards the right side.

The evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat is a mesmerizing sight and attracts many devotees and tourists.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

Situated on the hilltop near Swarg Ashram in Rishikesh, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple holds great mythological importance.

According to legends, Lord Shiva consumed the poison that emerged during the Samudra Manthan at this very place. After consuming the poison, his throat turned blue, and he became known as Neelkanth.

Parmarth Niketan Ghat

This ashram was established by Swami Vishuddhanand and is considered one of the oldest ashrams in Rishikesh.

Swami Vishuddhanand was also known as Kali Kamli Wale Baba. The ashram houses several beautiful temples that are worth visiting.

By Air

The nearest airport to Rishikesh is Jolly Grant Airport, located near Dehradun. The airport is approximately 21 kilometres away from Rishikesh.

Regular flights operate from Delhi Airport to Dehradun through airlines such as Air India, Jet Airways, and SpiceJet.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Rishikesh Railway Station, located around 5 kilometres from the city centre. Rishikesh is well connected with major railway stations across India.
