Mythological Story of Khatu Shyam Ji

The story of Khatu Shyam Ji dates back to the time of the Mahabharata.

When the great war between the Kauravas and Pandavas became certain, Barbarik also wished to participate in the battle. Before leaving for the war, he went to seek blessings from his mother.

His mother asked him which side he would support in the battle. Barbarik promised that he would always fight for the side that was weaker and losing.

After receiving his mother’s blessings, Barbarik mounted his blue horse and headed towards the battlefield of Kurukshetra carrying a bow and three powerful arrows.

When Lord Krishna saw Barbarik approaching, he took the form of a Brahmin to test him. Krishna stopped Barbarik and asked where he was going. Barbarik replied that he was going to participate in the Mahabharata war.

Hearing this, Lord Krishna, disguised as a Brahmin, questioned how he could fight a great war with only three arrows. Barbarik replied that even a single arrow was enough to defeat the entire enemy army and would return to his quiver after completing its task.

To test his power, Lord Krishna challenged him to pierce all the leaves of a nearby peepal tree with one arrow.

Barbarik accepted the challenge. He took out an arrow from his quiver, remembered God, and released it toward the tree. The arrow instantly pierced all the leaves and started moving around Lord Krishna’s feet because Krishna had hidden one leaf beneath his foot.

Barbarik told him to remove his foot, otherwise the arrow would pierce his foot as well.

After this, Lord Krishna asked Barbarik which side he would support during the war. Barbarik repeated his promise to his mother and said that he would fight for the side that was weak and losing.

Lord Krishna knew that the Kauravas were destined to lose, and if Barbarik joined the losing side, the entire outcome of the war could change.

Therefore, Lord Krishna, still disguised as a Brahmin, asked Barbarik for a donation. Barbarik promised to fulfill his request. Krishna then asked him for the donation of his head.

Barbarik was surprised for a moment, but keeping his promise, he sacrificed his head.

Lord Krishna then revealed his true identity and was pleased with Barbarik’s sacrifice and devotion. He blessed him with the boon that in Kaliyuga, he would be worshipped by the name Shyam.

Lord Krishna also blessed him that devotees who worship Shyam Ji with a pure heart would have their wishes fulfilled.
