Tuesday Puja (Mangalvar Puja)

According to the Gregorian calendar, Tuesday is the third day of the week. In Hindu tradition, Tuesday is known as Mangalvar, the day associated with Mangal (Mars). In Hindu mythology, the planet Mars is also called Bhauma, meaning the son of Mother Earth. The word Mangal itself signifies auspiciousness, well-being, and prosperity. Lord Hanuman, the devoted follower of Lord Rama, is also associated with this day and is revered as the embodiment of strength, courage, and devotion.

Tuesday is considered highly auspicious for beginning important tasks. Devotees observe a fast and worship Lord Hanuman (Bajrangbali), who is also known as Sankatmochan, the remover of obstacles and difficulties. It is believed that sincere worship of Lord Hanuman on Tuesdays helps devotees overcome hardships, fears, and negative influences while bringing strength, protection, and success.

Mangalvar Vrat Katha (Tuesday Vrat Story)

According to ancient Hindu scriptures, there once lived a humble Brahmin couple in a town. They were neither wealthy nor poor, earning just enough to support themselves through religious services, offerings, and donations. The couple were devoted followers of Lord Hanuman and faithfully observed the Tuesday fast, offering food to Bajrangbali before eating themselves.

Despite their devotion, they were deeply saddened because they had no children.

One day, the Brahmin went to a distant forest to perform special worship of Lord Hanuman, praying for the blessing of a son. Meanwhile, his wife continued observing the Tuesday fast with the same devotion.

One Tuesday, due to unavoidable circumstances, she was unable to prepare food and therefore could not offer bhog (sacred food offering) to Lord Hanuman. Feeling distressed, she made a solemn vow that she would not eat until she had first offered bhog to the Lord on the following Tuesday.

She remained without food until the next Tuesday.

By the time the following Tuesday arrived, she had become extremely weak and eventually lost consciousness. Moved by her unwavering faith and devotion, Lord Hanuman appeared before her and blessed her with a son.

She named the child Mangal.

Some time later, the Brahmin returned home from the forest. Seeing the child, he questioned his wife about his identity. She narrated the miraculous events exactly as they had happened.

However, the Brahmin found it difficult to believe the story. Doubt entered his mind.

One day, when no one was watching, he secretly threw the child into a nearby well and returned home. When his wife asked where Mangal was, they suddenly heard the child's voice calling out from outside.

The Brahmin was astonished to see the boy alive and unharmed.

At that moment, Lord Hanuman appeared before them and revealed that Mangal was indeed their son, granted through His divine blessing because of the woman's sincere devotion.

Realizing his mistake, the Brahmin bowed before Lord Hanuman, sought forgiveness, and accepted the child with gratitude.

From that day onward, the Brahmin couple lived happily and dedicated themselves to spreading the glory of Lord Hanuman, the Tuesday fast, and the Mangalvar Vrat Katha.

Since then, observing the Tuesday fast has been considered especially auspicious for those seeking children, happiness, prosperity, and fulfillment of heartfelt wishes.

Mangalvar Vrat Puja Vidhi (Tuesday Fast & Worship Procedure)

The Mangalvar Vrat holds great importance in Hindu tradition. It is believed that observing this fast with devotion frees devotees from fear, anxiety, and various difficulties in life. The fast is also considered highly beneficial for those experiencing the adverse effects of Saturn's Mahadasha, Sade Sati, or Dhaiya, as well as individuals seeking relief from Manglik Dosha.

The traditional method of observing the Tuesday fast includes the following:

  • Wake up before sunrise and complete your morning ablutions.
  • Take a bath and wear clean red-colored clothes, as red is considered auspicious for Lord Hanuman.
  • Observe celibacy (Brahmacharya) throughout the day.
  • Offer red flowers, vermilion (sindoor), red cloth, and other sacred offerings to Lord Hanuman.
  • Light a lamp before the deity and recite the Hanuman Chalisa or Sundarkand with devotion.
  • In the evening, offer besan laddoos (gram flour sweets) or kheer (rice pudding) as bhog to Lord Hanuman.
  • After completing the worship, consume only one salt-free meal.

According to traditional beliefs, faithfully observing the Mangalvar Vrat helps devotees receive the blessings of Lord Hanuman, removes obstacles, strengthens courage and determination, brings peace and prosperity, and offers relief from planetary afflictions, especially those related to Mars (Mangal) and Manglik Dosha.
