Nag Panchami Katha (Nag Panchami Story)

The popular Nag Panchami story revolves around a kind-hearted woman, her deep respect for life, and the special bond that develops between her and a serpent.

Long ago, a wealthy merchant lived in a town with his seven sons. All seven sons were married. The youngest daughter-in-law was gentle, compassionate, and virtuous. However, she did not have a brother of her own and often missed the affection and protection associated with a brother-sister relationship.

How a Serpent Became Her Brother

One day, the family needed yellow clay for household work. All the daughters-in-law went out with baskets and tools to collect the soil. While they were digging, they came across a serpent.

The elder daughters-in-law tried to kill the snake with a digging tool. However, the youngest daughter-in-law immediately stopped them.

She said, “Please do not kill it. What harm has it done to anyone?”

Because of her compassion, the serpent's life was spared. Before leaving, the young woman told the snake that she would return soon. However, after reaching home, she became busy with her household responsibilities and forgot about her promise.

The following day, she remembered the snake and returned to the same place. To her surprise, the serpent was still there.

She respectfully greeted him and said, “Nag brother, I bow to you.”

The serpent replied that although he had been upset because she had broken her promise, he forgave her because she had called him her brother. He accepted her as his sister, and a sacred bond of brotherly affection developed between them.

The Young Woman Visits Nag Lok

After some time, the serpent took human form and arrived at the merchant's home. He introduced himself as the woman's brother and asked to take her with him.

The family was initially hesitant, but after he explained himself, they allowed the youngest daughter-in-law to accompany him.

During their journey, the man revealed his true identity. He was the same serpent whose life she had once saved. Although she was initially nervous, she trusted her brother and continued travelling with him.

Eventually, they reached Nag Lok. The woman was amazed by its beauty, prosperity, and splendour. She was welcomed warmly and treated like a member of the family.

A Brother's Love for His Sister

One day, Nag Mata asked the woman to give her brother some cool milk. However, the woman accidentally brought hot milk instead. The hot milk burned the serpent's mouth.

Nag Mata became angry, but the serpent forgave his sister because he understood that she had made an innocent mistake.

When the time came for the woman to return to her husband's home, her Nag brother and his family lovingly gave her gold, silver, jewelry, and other precious gifts.

When the elder daughter-in-law saw the enormous wealth she had received, she became jealous. She repeatedly encouraged the youngest daughter-in-law to ask her Nag brother for more valuable gifts.

The Nag brother continued to fulfil his sister's wishes. Eventually, he gave her a beautiful necklace decorated with diamonds and precious gems.

The necklace became famous throughout the kingdom. When the queen heard about it, she ordered that it be brought to her.

Nag Devta Protects His Sister’s Honor

The queen wore the necklace, but as soon as she put it around her neck, it transformed into a snake. The frightened queen immediately informed the king.

The king summoned the youngest daughter-in-law to his court. She humbly explained that the necklace retained its true form only when she wore it.

When she put the necklace around her own neck, it once again became a magnificent piece of jewelry decorated with precious stones. The king was impressed and pleased. He honored the woman and presented her with several gifts.

However, when she returned home with even greater respect and wealth, the elder daughter-in-law's jealousy intensified. She began questioning the younger woman's character and even created doubts in the mind of her husband.

Heartbroken, the young woman once again remembered her Nag brother and prayed for his help. According to the Nag Panchami Katha, Nag Devta appeared and declared that anyone who falsely questioned the character of his virtuous sister would face his punishment.

Hearing this, everyone realized that the woman was innocent. Her honor was restored, and the entire family developed deep respect for Nag Devta and began worshipping him.

What Does the Nag Panchami Story Teach Us?

Another Mythological Story Associated With Nag Panchami

There is another important legend that helps explain why Nag Panchami is celebrated.

According to Hindu mythology, King Parikshit was cursed by the son of a sage. The curse stated that the king would die on the seventh day after being bitten by Takshak Nag.

As foretold, Takshak Nag bit King Parikshit on the seventh day, resulting in his death. The king's son, Janamejaya, was devastated and angry over his father's death. He decided to destroy all serpents and organized a massive Sarpa Yajna, or serpent sacrifice.

During the ritual, many serpents began falling into the sacrificial fire due to the power of the sacred chants. Even Takshak Nag's life was eventually threatened.

At this critical moment, Sage Astika intervened. He appealed to King Janamejaya to stop the sacrifice and put an end to the destruction of the serpents. The king accepted his request and stopped the yajna. As a result, the serpents were saved from complete destruction.

Based on this belief, the day on which the serpents were saved came to be associated with Nag Panchami. This is another reason devotees worship Nag Devta on this day and pray for protection, peace, and prosperity.
