The Story Behind Falgun Purnima

The story is of a powerful demon king named Hiranyakashipu. He wanted everyone to worship him as god. But his own son, Prahlad, was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu and refused to worship his father, and this made Hiranyakashipu lose his temper.

He undertook several attempts to kill his own son, but succeeded in none.

After failing in all attempts, Hiranyakashipu asked his sister Holika for help. Holika had a special shawl that made her immune to fire. The plan was simple: Holika would sit in a massive fire with Prahlad on her lap. She would be protected by her shawl, while Prahlad would burn to death.

On the day of Phalguna Purnima, a huge pyre was lit. Holika sat in it with young Prahlad. But something unexpected happened. Prahlad kept chanting the name of Lord Vishnu without fear, and his complete faith created divine protection around him.

The fire recognized true devotion. The shawl flew off Holika and covered Prahlad instead. Holika was burned to ashes while Prahlad emerged from the fire unharmed, still chanting Vishnu's name. This miracle proved that genuine faith is more powerful than any boon or magic.

Later, Lord Vishnu appeared as Narasimha (half-man, half-lion) and killed Hiranyakashipu, completing the victory of good over evil. This is why we light bonfires on Falgun Purnima, to honour that faith, truth, and goodness always triumph.
