Somwar Vrat Katha (Monday Vrat Story)

Married women commonly observe the Somwar Vrat for a happy and harmonious married life, while unmarried women keep this fast to seek a virtuous and suitable life partner.

According to Hindu traditions, there are four main types of Monday fasts dedicated to Lord Shiva:

• Weekly Somwar Vrat
• Pradosh Vrat
• Sawan Somwar Vrat
• Solah Somwar Vrat

Each of these fasts is observed with proper rituals, the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and the recitation or listening of the Somwar Vrat Katha.

The Legend of Somwar Vrat

Long ago, there lived a wealthy merchant in a village. Although he possessed immense wealth, he had no children. The absence of an heir caused him constant sorrow.

To seek Lord Shiva's blessings, the merchant observed the Monday fast every week. He worshipped Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with complete devotion and lit a sacred lamp before the Shivling every Monday evening.

One day, Goddess Parvati noticed the merchant's unwavering devotion and said to Lord Shiva:

"My Lord, this merchant is your sincere devotee. Every Monday he worships you with complete faith. I believe you should fulfill his wish."

Lord Shiva replied:

"O Goddess, this world operates according to the law of karma. Just as a farmer harvests only what he sows, every person receives the results of their actions."

However, Goddess Parvati lovingly insisted again, saying that true devotees should not return empty-handed. Moved by her compassion, Lord Shiva finally agreed.

He said:

"Although destiny does not grant this merchant a child, I bless him with a son because of your request. However, the child will live only until the age of twelve. I cannot change his fate beyond that."

That very night, Lord Shiva appeared in the merchant's dream and informed him that he would soon be blessed with a son, but the child would live for only twelve years.

The merchant accepted the blessing without revealing this secret to anyone.

Soon afterward, his wife gave birth to a handsome son. The entire household celebrated the child's birth, but the merchant remained worried, knowing the prophecy that awaited his son.

When the boy turned eleven, the merchant's wife suggested arranging his marriage. Instead, the merchant decided to send him to Kashi (Varanasi) for higher education. He entrusted the boy to his maternal uncle, instructing them to perform yajnas and feed Brahmins throughout their journey.

The uncle and nephew faithfully followed these instructions.

While traveling, they arrived in a kingdom where a princess was about to be married. The groom, however, was blind in one eye. Fearing that the bride's family would reject the marriage if they discovered this, the groom's father noticed the handsome merchant's son and requested him to temporarily take the groom's place during the wedding procession.

The young boy agreed.

Dressed as the groom, he rode the horse and completed the ceremonial entrance. Later, the groom's father also requested him to perform the wedding rituals and sacred marriage rounds (pheras) with the princess so that the truth would remain hidden. With his uncle's consent, the marriage ceremony was completed.

Before leaving for Kashi, however, the merchant's son secretly wrote a message on the bride's clothes:

"You have actually been married to me. The man who will later come for you is blind in one eye. I am now leaving for Kashi to pursue my education."

When the princess discovered the message, she refused to accompany the false groom. After learning the truth, her father declined to send his daughter with him, and the deception was exposed.

Meanwhile, the merchant's son reached Kashi and devoted himself to his studies while his uncle continued performing sacred yajnas.

Eventually, the boy turned twelve.

One day, feeling unusually tired, he told his uncle that he wished to rest. He went inside, lay down, and peacefully passed away, exactly as Lord Shiva had foretold.

When his uncle found him lifeless, he was overwhelmed with grief. Yet he restrained his sorrow because the yajna remained incomplete. Only after finishing the sacred ritual and feeding the Brahmins did he openly mourn the loss of his nephew.

At that very moment, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati happened to pass by.

Hearing the uncle's cries, Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva to help him. When they saw the deceased boy, Parvati recognized him as the merchant's son who had been born through Lord Shiva's blessing.

Filled with compassion, she pleaded:

"My Lord, please grant this child life once again. Otherwise, his parents will die of grief."

After repeated requests from Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva relented and restored the boy to life.

The grateful uncle and nephew resumed their journey home.

On the way, they passed through the same kingdom where the marriage had taken place. The princess's father immediately recognized the young man and joyfully welcomed them. A grand ceremony was organized, and the princess was finally sent with her rightful husband.

Meanwhile, the merchant and his wife sat anxiously on the rooftop of their home. Believing that their son had died, they had decided to end their own lives if he did not return safely.

Just then, the boy's uncle arrived with the wonderful news that their son was alive and returning home with his bride.

Moments later, the merchant saw his son alive before him. Overjoyed, he welcomed the newly married couple with great celebration. From that day onward, the family lived happily under the divine blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Moral: The Somwar Vrat teaches that sincere devotion, faith, and unwavering worship of Lord Shiva can overcome even the greatest hardships. While destiny plays its role, true devotion combined with divine grace can bring miraculous blessings and transform one's life.
