Sakat Chauth Vrat Katha

The Sakat Chauth Vrat is observed on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of the month of Magha to remove all difficulties and obstacles from life. Married women observe this fast for the long life, good health, and success of their children.

According to Hindu mythology, during the Satya Yuga, there lived an ascetic Brahmin named Rishisharma in the kingdom of King Harishchandra. Soon after the birth of his son, the Brahmin passed away. His widow raised their child by begging for alms to support the family.

In the same town lived a potter who made earthen pots. However, no matter what he did, his pots never hardened properly in the kiln. Distressed by this recurring problem, he sought the advice of a tantric and asked why his pots remained unbaked. The tantric shockingly suggested that sacrificing a child would solve the problem.

On the day of Sakat Chauth, the widowed Brahmin woman observed the sacred fast and worshipped Lord Ganesha for her son's well-being. Meanwhile, her young son went out to play with a small idol of Lord Ganesha hanging around his neck. The potter seized the child and placed him inside the burning kiln as a sacrifice.

When the boy did not return, his mother searched everywhere and, unable to find him, prayed earnestly to Lord Ganesha for his safety.

The following morning, when the potter opened the kiln expecting to find perfectly baked pots, he was astonished. Instead, he found the kiln filled with water up to his thighs, and inside sat the little boy happily playing, completely unharmed. Terrified by this miraculous sight, the potter rushed to King Harishchandra's court and narrated the entire incident.

The king immediately sent his ministers to discover the identity of the miraculous child. When the widowed Brahmin woman learned about the news, she hurried to claim her son.

The king asked the old woman how such an extraordinary miracle had taken place. She explained that she had faithfully observed the Sakat Chauth Vrat and worshipped Lord Ganesha with complete devotion. By the grace of Lord Ganesha and the power of the fast, her son had been protected and granted a new lease on life.

From that day onward, women began observing the Sakat Chauth Vrat with devotion for the longevity, prosperity, and well-being of their children and family.
