Sakat Chauth Vrat Katha
Sakat Chauth is observed on the Chaturthi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha to seek relief from obstacles and hardships. Married women observe this fast for the long life, good health, success, and well-being of their children. Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, is worshipped on this auspicious day.
The Sacred Story of Sakat Chauth
According to Hindu mythology, during the Satya Yuga, there lived a pious Brahmin named Rishisharma in the kingdom of King Harishchandra. Soon after the birth of his son, the Brahmin passed away.
His widow raised their child alone by begging for alms to support their livelihood.
In the same town lived a potter who earned his living by making earthen pots. However, no matter how hard he tried, his pots never hardened properly in the kiln. Frustrated, he sought the advice of a tantric and asked why his pots always remained unbaked.
The tantric suggested a cruel remedy—he told the potter that sacrificing a child would make the kiln successful.
On the day of Sakat Chauth, the widowed Brahmin woman observed the sacred fast and worshipped Lord Ganesha for the well-being of her son.
Meanwhile, her young son went out to play, wearing a small idol of Lord Ganesha around his neck. The potter saw the child, captured him, and secretly placed him inside the kiln before lighting it.
When the boy did not return home, his mother searched everywhere but could not find him. Filled with grief, she prayed earnestly to Lord Ganesha and placed her complete faith in Him.
The next morning, the potter went to open the kiln and check his pots. To his astonishment, he found the kiln filled with water up to his thighs, and inside it sat the little boy, alive and happily playing.
Terrified by this miraculous sight, the potter immediately went to King Harishchandra's court and narrated the entire incident.
The king sent his ministers to investigate and find the identity of the child. When the widowed Brahmin woman learned about the discovery, she rushed to the spot to take her son home.
The king asked her how such a miracle had occurred.
She humbly replied that she had observed the Sakat Chauth Vrat with complete devotion and worshipped Lord Ganesha. By the grace of Lord Ganesha and the power of the vrat, her son had been protected and granted a new life.
Deeply moved by this miracle, the king and the people of the kingdom glorified Lord Ganesha's blessings.
From that day onward, women began observing Sakat Chauth Vrat with faith and devotion for the protection, prosperity, and long life of their children and the happiness of their families.
