Ravivar Vrat Katha

In ancient times, there lived an elderly woman in a town. Every Sunday, she would wake up early, take a bath, and clean her courtyard by plastering it with cow dung. Afterward, she would worship Lord Surya, offer Him bhog (sacred food offering), and only then have her own meal.

Since she did not own a cow, she collected cow dung from her neighbor’s cow to clean her courtyard.

By the grace of Lord Surya, the old woman lived a peaceful and trouble-free life. Seeing her happiness, her neighbor became jealous. One Sunday, the neighbor locked her cow inside the house so that the elderly woman would not be able to collect cow dung. As a result, she could not clean her courtyard, perform her usual worship, or prepare food. She remained hungry throughout the day and went to sleep without eating.

That night, Lord Surya appeared in her dream and asked, "Why did you not offer Me bhog today?"

The old woman humbly replied, "I do not have a cow of my own. My neighbor kept her cow inside the house today, so I could not clean my courtyard or cook food for Your offering."

Pleased by her unwavering devotion, Lord Surya said, "I am delighted by your sincere faith. I bless you with a cow that will fulfill all your wishes."

The next morning, when the elderly woman woke up, she found a beautiful cow and its calf standing in her courtyard. Filled with gratitude, she began serving the cow with great love and devotion.

When the jealous neighbor learned that the old woman now owned a cow, she became even more envious. One day, she discovered that the cow produced golden dung. Astonished, the neighbor secretly collected the golden dung whenever the old woman was away and replaced it with ordinary cow dung from her own cow. By doing this repeatedly, the neighbor became wealthy within a short period.

Seeing this injustice, Lord Surya decided to intervene. One evening, He caused a powerful storm. To protect the cow, the old woman tied it inside her house. The next morning, she discovered that the cow had indeed produced golden dung. From then on, she kept the cow indoors every day.

Unable to bear this any longer, the jealous neighbor informed the king that the old woman possessed a miraculous cow that produced golden dung. The king sent his soldiers to bring both the woman and her cow to the royal palace.

However, when the cow arrived at the palace, it filled the entire palace with foul-smelling dung instead of golden dung.

That very night, Lord Surya appeared in the king’s dream and said, "This cow belongs only to the elderly woman. She faithfully observes the Ravivar Vrat every Sunday and offers Me bhog with devotion. It is in your best interest to return the cow to her."

The next morning, the king immediately returned the cow to the old woman and also rewarded her with great wealth. He then announced throughout the kingdom that all citizens should observe the Ravivar Vrat every Sunday and worship Lord Surya with devotion.
