Pradosh Vrat Katha
Although different stories are recited for Pradosh Vrat based on the day of the week on which the fast falls, one of the most popular and widely narrated legends is as follows.
Once, in a village, there lived a poor widowed Brahmin woman with her only son. They survived by begging for alms every day and lived on whatever food they received. The Brahmin woman had been faithfully observing the Pradosh Vrat for many years with great devotion to Lord Shiva.
One day, on the auspicious Trayodashi Tithi, her son went to the Ganga to take a holy bath. While returning home after completing the ritual, he encountered a group of robbers. The robbers stole all his belongings and fled.
A short while later, the king’s soldiers arrived at the scene. Mistaking the young Brahmin for one of the robbers, they arrested him and presented him before the king. Without listening to the young man's explanation, the king ordered that he be imprisoned.
That night, Lord Shiva appeared in the king’s dream and instructed him to release the innocent Brahmin youth immediately. After giving the command, Lord Shiva disappeared.
The next morning, the king rushed to the prison and ordered the young man’s release. He brought him back to the royal court, honoured him, and asked him to request any reward he desired.
To the king’s surprise, the young Brahmin asked only for a handful of rice as his reward.
The king was astonished and asked, “What will you do with just a handful of rice? Ask for something greater. Such an opportunity does not come often.”
The humble young man replied, “O King, at this moment, this handful of rice is the most precious gift for me. I will take it to my mother so she can prepare kheer and offer it to Lord Shiva as bhog. After offering it to Him, we will eat the blessed food and satisfy our hunger.”
Deeply moved by the young man's devotion, humility, and faith, the king became extremely pleased. He immediately ordered his minister to bring the Brahmin woman to the royal court with full respect.
When the woman arrived, the king narrated the entire incident to her and praised her son’s noble character and unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva.
As a reward, the king appointed the young Brahmin as one of his royal advisors. From that day onward, the lives of the poor Brahmin woman and her son changed forever, and they lived happily under Lord Shiva’s divine blessings.
