Narasimha Jayanti Vrat Katha

According to Hindu mythology, Sage Kashyapa and Goddess Aditi had two sons named Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. Both brothers were extremely powerful and became rulers of the demon race.

Hiranyaksha created immense terror in the world, and to protect the universe, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Varaha and defeated him. Enraged by his brother's death, Hiranyakashipu decided to take revenge on Lord Vishnu.

To gain extraordinary powers, Hiranyakashipu performed severe penance for thousands of years and pleased Lord Brahma. When Brahma Ji appeared before him and asked him to seek a boon, Hiranyakashipu requested that he should not be killed by any human or animal. Brahma Ji granted his wish by saying, "Tathastu."

After receiving this boon, Hiranyakashipu became fearless and began spreading terror across the three worlds. He drove the gods away from heaven and established his control over all three realms. To take revenge against Lord Vishnu, he declared that he himself was the supreme God and ordered everyone in his kingdom to worship only him.

However, after the birth of his son Prahlad, Hiranyakashipu became troubled by his unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu. Despite repeated attempts, he could not change Prahlad's faith. He even tried to kill Prahlad with the help of his sister Holika, who had a boon to remain unharmed by fire. However, due to divine intervention, Holika was burned while Prahlad remained safe.

After Holika's death, Hiranyakashipu became extremely furious and decided to kill Prahlad on Vaishakh Shukla Chaturdashi.

Hiranyakashipu asked Prahlad to call upon his Lord Vishnu for help. Prahlad calmly replied that Lord Vishnu exists everywhere and is present in every particle of creation.

Mocking him, Hiranyakashipu pointed towards a pillar and asked, "Is your Vishnu present in this pillar as well?"

Prahlad answered, "Yes, He is present there too."

Hearing this, Hiranyakashipu became angry and struck the pillar with his weapon. At that very moment, the pillar broke open, and Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Narasimha, a divine being with the body of a man and the head of a lion.

Lord Narasimha placed Hiranyakashipu on his lap and killed him by tearing open his stomach with his sharp claws. In this way, Lord Vishnu fulfilled Brahma Ji's boon, as Hiranyakashipu was neither killed by a human nor an animal, neither during the day nor night, and neither inside nor outside a house.

Even after defeating Hiranyakashipu, Lord Narasimha's anger did not subside. Seeing his intense rage, all the gods approached him to calm him down. Even Lord Shiva appeared before Narasimha to pacify him, but Lord Narasimha's anger remained unchanged.

According to some traditional accounts, Lord Shiva then took the fierce form of Sharabha and restrained Lord Narasimha, after which his anger gradually subsided.

The divine purpose of Lord Narasimha's incarnation was fulfilled — to protect his devotee Prahlad and establish the victory of righteousness over evil.
