Maa Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha
In Hinduism, every vrat and puja has its own unique significance and is observed with a specific purpose. If a person is facing obstacles in marriage, experiencing difficulties in married life, or longing for the blessing of children, observing the Maa Mangala Gauri Vrat with devotion is considered highly auspicious. This sacred fast is observed on every Tuesday during the holy month of Shravan (Sawan) in honor of Goddess Parvati, worshipped in her auspicious form as Maa Mangala Gauri.
While performing the puja, devotees traditionally chant the following mantra:
सर्वमंगल मांगल्ये, शिवे सर्वार्थ साधिके।
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरी नारायणी नमोऽस्तुते॥
According to Hindu tradition, reading or listening to the Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha during the worship is considered an essential part of the vrat and is believed to make the observance complete and fruitful.
Maa Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha
According to a popular legend, there once lived a wealthy merchant named Dharmapala. He possessed immense wealth and prosperity, but despite all his riches, he and his wife remained deeply unhappy because they had no children to carry forward their family lineage.
Filled with sorrow, Dharmapala devoted himself to intense prayers, meditation, religious rituals, and penance to seek the blessings of the Divine Mother. Pleased with his sincere devotion, Goddess Mangala Gauri appeared before him and asked him to request a boon.
The merchant humbly said,
"Mother, I have every comfort and abundance in life, but I have no child. Please bless me with a son who will continue my family lineage."
The Goddess replied,
"You have asked for a rare blessing. I am pleased with your devotion and shall grant your wish. However, your son will live only until the age of sixteen."
Although saddened by the condition attached to the boon, Dharmapala and his wife gratefully accepted the Goddess's blessing.
Soon afterward, the merchant's wife conceived and gave birth to a son. During his naming ceremony, the child was named Chirayu, meaning "one blessed with a long life."
As the years passed, however, the parents became increasingly anxious because they knew that their son's sixteenth birthday would also mark the end of his life.
One day, a learned scholar advised the merchant:
"If your son marries a virtuous girl who faithfully observes the Mangala Gauri Vrat, the spiritual merit of her devotion will protect her husband and bless him with a long life."
Trusting the scholar's guidance, Dharmapala arranged Chirayu's marriage to a devoted young woman who regularly observed the Mangala Gauri Vrat with complete faith and sincerity.
By the power of her devotion and the blessings of Maa Mangala Gauri, Chirayu's destined untimely death was averted. The dosha causing his premature death was removed, and true to his name, he was blessed with a long and prosperous life.
