Hanuman Jayanti Vrat Katha
Hanuman Jayanti is one of the most sacred festivals for devotees of Lord Hanuman. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Hanuman is the greatest devotee of Lord Rama and is revered as the embodiment of strength, wisdom, courage, devotion, and fearlessness.
Whenever devotees face difficulties or obstacles in life, they seek the blessings of Pawanputra Hanuman, who is also known by many revered names, including Bajrangbali, Mahavir, Anjaneya, Anjanisut, Sankatmochan, Chiranjeevi, and Kesari Nandan.
Having dedicated his entire life to the service of Lord Rama, Hanuman was blessed by Lord Rama with immortality (Chiranjeevi) so that he would continue to protect devotees throughout the ages. Despite possessing immense power, Hanuman remained a lifelong celibate (Brahmachari) and an ideal example of humility and selfless devotion.
The Story of Hanuman's Birth
According to one popular legend, the celestial nymph Punjikasthala once performed a dance in the court of Lord Indra when the great sage Angira visited heaven.
The sage, deeply absorbed in meditation, paid no attention to the performance. When asked for his opinion afterward, he honestly admitted that he had no interest in watching the dance.
Feeling insulted, Punjikasthala became angry. In return, Sage Angira cursed her to be born on Earth as a female monkey (Vanari).
Realizing her mistake, she begged the sage for forgiveness, but the curse could not be withdrawn. She later sought the blessings of another sage, who assured her that during Satya Yuga, she would give birth to a divine child who would assist Lord Vishnu's incarnation in establishing righteousness.
As a result of this blessing, Punjikasthala was reborn as Anjana, the daughter of the Vanara chief Kunjara. She later married Kesari, a powerful Vanara king.
In due course, Anjana gave birth to a son who came to be known as Hanuman, destined to become one of the greatest devotees of Lord Rama.
Another Popular Birth Legend
Another well-known tradition connects Hanuman's birth with King Dasharatha's Putrakameshti Yajna.
According to this legend, King Dasharatha performed the sacred sacrifice under the guidance of Sage Vashistha and with the assistance of Rishya Shringa to obtain children.
At the conclusion of the yajna, Agni Dev (the Fire God) emerged from the sacrificial fire carrying a divine bowl of kheer (sweet rice pudding) and instructed that it be distributed among Dasharatha's three queens.
As Queen Kaikeyi held her portion, a celestial bird carried away part of the divine offering. While flying over the hermitage of Goddess Anjana, a portion of the sacred kheer accidentally fell into her hands. Accepting it as divine grace, Anjana consumed it.
Through this divine blessing, she conceived Lord Hanuman, who was born on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Chaitra month, a day now celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti.
The Divine Birth of Hanuman
Lord Hanuman is widely regarded as the eleventh Rudra incarnation (Rudra Avatar) of Lord Shiva. His mother was Anjana, and his father was Kesari, while Vayu Dev (the Wind God) is also honored as his spiritual father because of his role in Hanuman's divine birth.
Some traditional astrological beliefs state that Hanuman was born on a Tuesday, during Chitra Nakshatra, under Mesha (Aries) Lagna, at sunrise. Another long-standing tradition identifies Anjan village in present-day Jharkhand as one of the sacred places associated with his birth.
From the moment of his birth, Hanuman possessed a body as strong as the Vajra (thunderbolt), making him an extraordinary divine being blessed with unmatched strength and valor.
Significance of Hanuman Jayanti
Hanuman Jayanti commemorates the birth of the eternal devotee of Lord Rama and reminds devotees of the values of devotion, humility, courage, discipline, and unwavering faith.
