Anant Chaturdashi Vrat Katha

According to the Puranas, there once lived a sage named Sumanta, whose wife was Diksha. In due course, Diksha gave birth to a beautiful daughter named Sushila. Sadly, Diksha passed away soon afterward, leaving the young child without her mother's care.

Concerned about Sushila's upbringing, Sage Sumanta remarried. His second wife, Karkasha, lived up to her name, as she was harsh and ill-tempered toward Sushila.

Despite these hardships, Sushila grew into a virtuous young woman. When she came of age, Sage Sumanta arranged her marriage to Sage Kaundinya. However, even after marriage, the couple struggled with poverty and hardship, often wandering through forests in search of a better life.

One day, Sushila saw a group of devotees performing the Anant Chaturdashi Vrat and tying the sacred Anant Raksha Sutra around their wrists. Curious to know more, she asked them about the significance of the fast and the proper method of worship.

After learning the rituals, Sushila observed the fast with complete devotion and tied the Anant Sutra on her wrist. Soon afterward, the fortunes of Sushila and Kaundinya began to improve, and prosperity gradually entered their lives.

Over time, however, Sage Kaundinya became proud, believing that their success was solely the result of his own hard work and efforts.

The following year, on Anant Chaturdashi, Sushila once again performed the worship of Lord Ananta and returned home wearing the sacred thread. Seeing it on her wrist, Kaundinya asked about its significance.

Joyfully, Sushila explained that their prosperity had come through the blessings of Lord Ananta and the observance of the sacred vrat. Hearing this, Kaundinya felt insulted, believing that Sushila was giving credit to the sacred thread instead of acknowledging his efforts.

In anger, he removed the Anant Sutra from her wrist and discarded it.

This act displeased Lord Ananta (Lord Vishnu). Soon, all the wealth and prosperity they had gained disappeared, and the couple was once again plunged into poverty and suffering.

Realizing the consequences of his actions, Kaundinya met a wise sage who explained that his pride and disrespect toward Lord Ananta had brought about his misfortune. Filled with remorse, Kaundinya sincerely repented and observed the Anant Chaturdashi Vrat with devotion for fourteen consecutive years.

Pleased by his sincere repentance and unwavering faith, Lord Hari (Lord Vishnu) blessed Kaundinya and Sushila once again. Their prosperity, happiness, and peace were restored, and they spent the rest of their lives in comfort and devotion.

This sacred Anant Chaturdashi Vrat Katha teaches that humility, faith, gratitude, and devotion are essential virtues. It reminds devotees that true success comes not only through personal effort but also through divine grace, and that arrogance can lead to the loss of even the greatest blessings.
