Meaning and Significance of Hartalika
The word Hartalika is a combination of two Sanskrit words:
‘Harat’ meaning abduction
‘Aalika’ meaning female friend
The term refers to the legend where Goddess Parvati was abducted by her female friend to prevent her unwanted marriage to Lord Vishnu, enabling her to continue her penance for Lord Shiva.
This day commemorates Parvati’s unwavering devotion, and women observe this fast to seek marital happiness, the well-being of their spouses, and a harmonious married life.
Mythological Story (Vrat Katha) of Hartalika Teej
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati, the daughter of King Himavat, wished to marry Lord Shiva. However, her father wanted her to marry Lord Vishnu. To avoid this marriage, Parvati’s friend took her away into the forest, where she performed intense penance and meditation.
Impressed by her unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before her and agreed to marry her. Their divine union symbolizes love, patience, and determination. Since then, Hartalika Teej Vrat is observed by women to emulate Goddess Parvati's devotion and seek blessings for marital bliss.
