Have you ever wondered why we bow down to serpents? Nag Panchami is not just a festival; it’s an ancient ritual of surrender to the lord. From Sheshnag, on whom Lord Vishnu reclines, to the serpent Vasuki, who helped churn the ocean, and the snake adorning Lord Shiva’s throat. Serpents are worshipped as the messengers of the divine guardians of Karma, and gateways to transformation.

Significance of Nagas: Unfolding The Mystical Energy of Serpents

According to Narad Muni (a divine sage), Naglok is a place where there is no sun, but it resembles the Swarg (Heaven), where everything is bright like shimmering gold. Divine Serpents (Nagas) reside in Naglok and are depicted as half-humans, half-snakes.

Moreover, Nagas represent the awakening of the Kundalini ( spiritual energy), indicating the Ida Nadi (Lunar channel) energy flows through the left nostril and the Pingala Nadi (Solar channel) energy flows through the right nostril, thus meeting the Crown Chakra (Sahastrara).

Serpents (Nagas) also play a crucial role in Sadhna (meditation) as they represent the transformative energy that helps in flowing the energy from the lower Chakras to the higher Chakras.

Here are the 12 Nagas that are worshipped during Nag Panchami.

  • Vasuki

  • Ananta

  • Shesha

  • Padma

  • Kambala

  • Karkotaka

  • Ashvatara

  • Dhritarashtra

  • Shankhapala

How to Perform Nag Panchami Puja

You might be looking for the Nag Panchmi Puja Vidhi. So let’s dive into the spiritual rituals to attract divine blessings in our lives.

  • Firstly, wake up early in the morning and take a bath.

  • Clean up your temple altar space and sprinkle holy Ganges water, light a Ghee lamp, and incense sticks.

  • Visit your nearby Lord Shiva temple and offer milk, honey, Ganges water, Ghee, jaggery, and incense to the Shiva Linga and the Snake above the Shiva Linga.

Kaal Sarp Dosha Puja is the main ritual performed on the auspicious day of Nag Panchami. Kaal Sarp Dosha is formed in one’s horoscope when all the zodiac planets fall in between Rahu and Ketu. This Dosha brings challenges in an individuals life but by performing this Puja, one can rectify the malefic effects of Rahu and Ketu and add positivity, luck and growth into their lives.

People also celebrate Nag Panchami by worshipping the holy snake idols at home, but since the serpent energy is uncontrollable, it is recommended to worship Nagas with Lord Shiva rather than worshipping them solely.

Legend Associated With Nag Panchami

According to the Scriptures, during the period of Dwapar Yuga, King Parikshit (grandson of Arjuna) was bitten by the serpent Takshak, which eventually led to the demise of Parikshit. To avenge the death of his father, Janamejaya (son of Parikshit) organized the Sarpa Yagna with the intent to eliminate the snakes from this world.

On Panchami Tithi (5th day) of Shravan month, sages arrived at the Yagna to chant mantras, which attracted a large number of snakes to the sacrificial pit. Seeing this, Takshak asked Lord Indra to protect him, but the powerful mantras didn’t let Lord Indra help Takshak.

When Lord Indra found that he was not able to protect Takshak, he went to Goddess Manasa ( Queen of Snakes) and asked her to save the serpents. Goddess Manasa sent his son Astika to Janamejaya Yagna with a request to forgive Takshak and stop the Yagna.

King Janmejaya couldn’t deny his request and agreed to stop the Yagna. Since then, Panchami tithi is observed as Nag Panchami to protect, worship, and seek blessings of the serpents.

Summary

Celebrate Nag Panchami 2025 with devotion, surrender yourself to the divine, and cleanse your Karmic Doshas and attract wealth, peace, and positivity into your life. Seek blessings from the divine serpents to stay protected.
