Simply put, the Griha Pravesh ceremony is a house-entry Puja. When you are moving into a new home and want to perform this ceremony, you should always keep in mind the auspicious or Shubh days and dates. This ceremony should always be conducted on an auspicious day and time.

Getting to Know The Importance of Shubh Muhurat for Griha Pravesh

Entering your new home is considered to be an auspicious moment for any individual. All of us work hard to be able to have a house of our own. When someone moves into a new home, one hopes that happiness, prosperity, and peace will reign supreme in their life. It is strongly believed by devout Hindus that the Griha Pravesh ceremony done on an auspicious Tithi and Lagna can bring positivity, good vibes, fortune, and luck to the inhabitants of the house, which is why this ceremony is organized. Puja is an act of praying and worshipping deities for gaining their blessings for a life filled with peace and abundance.

The word 'Griha' denotes house, and 'Pravesh' means entry in Sanskrit. The Griha Pravesh ceremony is done to show gratitude and thankfulness to God for helping build a new home or moving into a new residence. It is considered of utmost importance for the family members to perform the Griha Pravesh Puja. This ceremony is believed to welcome divine and pious blessings to the new premise. It can ward off all evils and negative vibes from the house. Performing this Puja is believed to bring long-lasting happiness, harmony, and welfare to the new residence and the entire family. As per Vastu Shastra, performing this auspicious Griha Pravesh Puja can remove negativities and Doshas, helping you seek blessings for your new house. Since the Griha Pravesh Puja is deemed necessary, you must not occupy your own house or move into it and start living there without performing this auspicious ritual. To have a positive living space, Griha Pravesh must be done on a Shubh Muhurat.

As this ceremony is considered to be of such importance, it must be performed on an auspicious or Shubh Muhurat so that prosperity, happiness, and harmony remain in your house, and life flourishes beautifully.

Wondering what a Muhurat is? Let’s find out.

In astrology, the Muhurta or Muhurat is a space of time in the day which is regarded as the most favorable and auspicious time to perform a task. When a task is performed in a Shubh Muhurat, there is a better chance of success. Doing any ritual or a task at an opportune and appropriate time will give you maximum results. Therefore, when it comes to conducting a Griha Pravesh Puja, you must consider the Muhurat. How your life will be like in your new house depends on what time the ceremony is commenced. When an auspicious time is followed for a ceremony, everything that is intended to happen will occur as per its intended purpose.

Most people, especially Hindus, are quite particular about the Shubh Muhurats when moving to a new house or purchasing a property. This is because doing the Puja on Griha Pravesh Muhurat will confer positive energy, fortune, and luck to the house's inhabitants. The promising dates for the Griha Pravesh ceremony are calculated after doing Panchang Shuddhi. It also offers the auspicious time to perform the Puja, Homam, and Vastu Shanti Puja. Griha Pravesh Muhurats are calculated based on the dates (Tithis), days, Lagna, and Nakshatra.

The auspicious dates and times for this Puja are determined through the astrological charts by expert Vedic astrologers. Many factors need to be kept in mind while calculating the Shubh Muhurat. The most important factors are the Nakshatras or constellations. The most auspicious constellations are Mrigashirsha, Rohini, Chitra, Uttara Bhadrapada, Uttara Phalguni, Anuradha, Revati, and Uttara Ashadha, to name a few. Days such as Vasant Panchami, Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Dussehra, etc., are considered favorable for the Puja. However, astrologers regard months such as Chaturmas, Kharmas, Shradh, etc., as inauspicious for entering a new house. Other occasions like Holi, Adhikmas, Shraddha Paksha, etc., should also be avoided strictly.

5 Things to Remember for Griha Pravesh

Regarding the Griha Pravesh ceremony, there are some things you should keep in mind.

  1. You shouldn’t plan a Griha Pravesh or housewarming ceremony if your house is still under construction or if some renovation work is still on. This is not considered auspicious. Always ensure that your house is complete, including door fittings, paintwork, complete construction of the roof, etc.
  2. Clean up the place where you would like to get the Griha Pravesh Puja done. Also, don’t forget to purify the place by sprinkling Gangajal (water from the holy Ganges).
  3. A Havan and Vastu Puja along with a Navagraha Shanti Vidhan should be conducted to ward off all negativities from the house.
  4. You should serve food first to the priests and then to all your family members and friends who have gathered for the ceremony.
  5. After the Griha Pravesh ceremony, you shouldn’t keep the house locked or vacant for at least forty days as it is considered inauspicious.
