Significance of Ganesh Visarjan

Devotees strongly believe that on Ganpati Visarjan, Lord Ganesha returns to his home on Mount Kailash. The celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi conclude with the massive Visarjan, which is the immersion of Lord Ganesha’s idol in the sea or any water body. Lord Ganesha is believed to be the remover of all obstacles from the lives of his devotees and the God of good beginnings. In Hindu rituals, Lord Ganesha is paid reverence before any auspicious task. Hence, Lord Ganesha is worshiped first, no matter the occasion.

On this occasion, devotees pay their respects and reverence to the spiritual and divine state. The event commemorates Lord Ganesha’s journey from “Aakar” to “Nirakar.” This is the only Hindu festival that honors and celebrates the spiritual and physical manifestations of the divine being.

The Ganeshotsav, starting on Ganesh Chaturthi, culminates on Anant Chaturdashi. It is also an important day to worship the divine Lord Vishnu in the eternal Anant form. Along with Ganesh Visarjan, Anant Chaturdashi fast is also observed by devotees of Lord Vishnu. They tie a sacred thread during the Puja, as it is believed that the sacred thread protects people from troubles.

When Can Ganpati Visarjan Be Performed?

  • Ganpati Visarjan can be done on the same day as Ganesh Chaturthi after completing the Ganesh Puja. As per Hindu beliefs, the Visarjan of Utthapana of the Hindu deities is done at the end of the Puja. But, the Ganpati Visarjan on Ganesha Chaturthi is done on rare occasions.
  • When the devotees do Ganesh Visarjan on the next day of Ganesh Chaturthi, it is known as one and half day Ganpati Visarjan. Devotees who perform the Ganpati Visarjan on this day usually get the Puja performed in the afternoon. After Madhyana, they can take Lord Ganesha’s idols for Visarjan.
  • The day of Anant Chaturdashi is considered the most auspicious and important day to perform Ganpati Visarjan. However, many people perform the Ganpati Visarjan on the 3rd, 5th, or 7th day from Ganesh Chaturthi, rather than performing it on the 11th day from Ganesh Chaturthi.
  • As mentioned above, Anant Chaturdashi is the most significant day for Ganpati Visarjan. The last day is filled with festivities. On this day, Lord Ganesha’s idol is immersed in a water body.

Rituals Associated with Ganpati Visarjan

Devotees bring Lord Ganesha on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi to their homes and worship him with great reverence and devotion. Ganpati Visarjan is when the devotees say goodbye to Lord Ganesh to commemorate the ending of the festivities.

Devotees perform Lord Ganesha’s Puja and bid farewell to him on Ganesh Visarjan by following these steps.

  • Devotees offer things to Lord Ganesha that he likes, like Modaks, Ladoos, or any other home-cooked sweets. You must light incense sticks and diyas, offer flowers to Lord Ganesha and worship him duly. Also, do Aarti with your family and relatives present.
  • After the Aarti, as the Muhurat for Ganpati Visarjan approaches, everyone should come together to the Puja altar and pick up Lord Ganesha’s idol. Before picking the idol up, move it towards yourself. This change of position means the end of Lord Ganesha’s stay at your home, and then you can head for the Visarjan. You must be grateful to the divine deity for visiting your home. You must thank him for bringing prosperity, happiness, and auspiciousness to your home and for taking away all the problems and worries with him. Thanking Lord Ganesha makes him feel pleased as he feels loved.
  • Offer Akshata to Lord Ganesha. Also, put some curd in Lord Ganesha’s hands.
  • Place a dry coconut, jaggery, and five different grains in a red cloth, and keep this tied cloth near Lord Ganesha. This serves as a meal to satisfy Lord Ganesha’s hunger during the trip home.
  • Sprinkle some water on the person performing the rituals for Ganpati Visarjan.
  • Take Lord Ganesha’s idol and take him around the house, especially the kitchen and master bedrooms, so that his blessings and grace fall on your home and your life. Keep chanting “Ganapati Bappa Morya” and other mantras with full enthusiasm.
  • Come out of your house, holding the idol. Another person should hold a coconut, make three circles over Lord Ganesha’s head, and break it in one go on the floor. This coconut should be immersed with the idol.
  • Family members can proceed to the Ganpati Visarjan venue, where Aarti should be performed one last time with everyone.
  • Remove garlands, ornaments of flowers, and other decorations from Lord Ganesha’s idol and dispose of them properly.
  • Finally, take the idol and immerse it in the water body.

Lord Ganesha’s blessings will remain with you. His blessings will offer you peace, good health, and fortune.
