Pradosh Vrat 2019

The festival of Pradosh Vrat, commonly known as Pradosham in the southern parts of India, is celebrated to worship Lord Shiva. According to the Hindu Lunar calendar, the festival is observed twice a month, on both Trayodashi Tithi-  on Shukla Paksha Trayodashi as well as on Krishna Paksha Trayodashi.

When Pradosh Vrat day falls on a Monday, it is called Soma Pradosham, on a Tuesday, it is called Bhauma Pradosham, and on a Saturday, it is called Shani Pradosham.

Customs and Rituals Observed-

The meaning of ‘Pradosh’ is the removal of sins. Devotees of Lord Shiva observe Pradosh Vrat, to seek his blessings, and to remove negative karma caused by any mistakes they may have made. By keeping the fast, devotees are also blessed with good health and wealth. Astrologers also suggest couples, who may be having trouble in conceiving, to observe this fast. Many people also worship Goddess Parvati along with Lord Shiva.

A traditional ritual also includes lighting a deep (diya) in front of the idol of Lord Shiva, or even going for darshan(visiting) to a Shiva Temple. The deity, Lord Bholenath, another form of Lord Shiva, is also worshipped. Devotees chant the Shiva Chalisa (a prayer for Lord Shiva) during the puja.
