Pradosh Vrat 2026 - Getting to Know All About It

The auspicious occasion of Pradosh Vrat, commonly known as Pradosham in the southern parts of India, is celebrated to worship Lord Shiva. As per the Hindu Lunar calendar, the festival is observed twice a month, on both Trayodashi Tithi (13th day) on Shukla Paksha Trayodashi as well as on Krishna Paksha Trayodashi. Observing Pradosh Vrat is considered to be very promising and beneficial. Devotees eagerly wait for this auspicious day, as with this fast, all the person's wishes are fulfilled. This Vrat can be observed by anyone, irrespective of their gender and age.

When Pradosh Vrat is on a Monday, it is called Soma Pradosham Vrat. If it coincides with Thursday, it is known as Guru Pradosh Vrat, and if it falls on a Saturday, it is called Shani Pradosham Vrat. If it is on a Tuesday, it is termed as Bhauma Pradosham Vrat.

Pradosh Vrat Customs and Rituals Observed

The meaning of the word 'Pradosh' is the removal of sins. Devotees of Lord Shiva observe the Pradosh Vrat to seek his blessings and remove negative Karma caused by any mistakes or sins they may have made in the past. By observing this fast, devotees are also blessed with good health and fortune. It is commonly believed that by keeping this fast and praying to Lord Shiva, all your desires can get fulfilled.

On this auspicious day, many people also worship Goddess Parvati along with Lord Shiva. A traditional ritual also includes lighting a Diya in front of the idol of Lord Shiva or even visiting a Shiva Temple. It is believed that lighting even a single Diya on this day can be very rewarding. Devotees chant the Shiva Chalisa (a prayer for Lord Shiva) during the puja. The devotees also listen to Pradosh Vrat Katha on this day.

It is believed that devotees who observe this fast with devotion are bound to get contentment, bountiful wealth, good health, and blessings.
