What Have You Got to Do With Jupiter

The largest planet in our Solar System, the Jupiter or ‘Brihaspati Grah’, can easily be seen in the night in the sky. According to Indian mythology, this planet is believed to be the “Mentor of the Gods or Deities” and also represents “Dakshinamurthi”-‘The God who dispels darkness and ignorance to endow wisdom’. In other parts of the world, the ancient Greeks referred to Jupiter as,”Zeus”-‘The Father of the Gods’, Egyptians worshipped the planet as “Ammon” and Babylonians and Chaldeans called the planet,”Merodach”.

According to Vedic mythology, Brihaspati worshipped Lord Shiva for a thousand years and as a reward, Shiva made Brihaspati the planet Jupiter.

Jupiter is a male planet and represents teachers, guides, priests and elder people.

The day for Jupiter is Thursday and the colour is yellow. The metal representing Jupiter is gold and the precious stone is yellow sapphire. Jupiter rules the Zodiac signs, Sagittarius and Pisces. The planet is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn. Jupiter is friendly with the Sun, Moon and Mars and is enemies with Mercury and Venus. The planet is neutral with Saturn and Rahu.

Jupiter rules the constellations, ‘Punarvasu’, ‘Vishakha’ and ‘Poorva Bhadrapada’.

When Jupiter is strong and well-placed in a native’s chart, it grants him many positive aspects of life, like wisdom, luck, respect in society, power, intellectuality, wealth, peace of mind, spirituality and generosity. Natives remain motivated towards religion, education, entrepreneurship, astrology, law and politics and have high moral values. Being the largest planet, it represents scope for growth, expansion and development in all spheres of life.

Jupiter has the power to balance the ill-effects of malefic planets in a native’s birth chart.

When Jupiter is well placed in a woman’s horoscope, she has a loving relationship with her husband and if not positioned favourably, she will be arrogant and adamant and spoil the relationship with her spouse.

On the other hand, when Jupiter is negative in a native’s horoscope, it indicates arrogance, pessimism, depression and exhaustion.

Jupiter affects many parts of our body, like, the liver, lower abdomen, hips, arteries, circulation of blood, ears, nose and when ill-placed, may cause diseases like jaundice, chronic constipation, cough, colds, asthma, nose bleeding, blood pressure and fits. Since Jupiter represents growth and accumulation, it rules over tumours, malignancies, fat in the body etc.

Professions, such as religion, preaching, administration, law, banking, treasury, foreign affairs come under the domain of Jupiter. Being a ‘karaka’ of children, professions related to child rearing, like education, come under the realm of Jupiter.

Remedial measures should be performed by natives who have a weak Jupiter, to bring better quality to their lives. Some of them are-

  1. Donate sugar, yellow clothes, yellow flowers, yellow foods and fruits like bananas, Kesar, salt, turmeric on Thursday to Brahmins, to calm Jupiter if it is afflicted.
  2. Keep a fast on Thursday and feed banana and yellow sweets to poor people and especially to crows.
  3. Chant the Brihaspati mantra 108 times daily-

“Om jhram jhreem jhroum sah guruvey namah”

Traditionally Yours,
