On the fourth day of Navratri, Goddess Kushmanda is worshipped. Her name is formed with three words — 'Ku', 'Ushma' and 'Anda'; Ku stands for little, Ushma stands for warmth and Anda means egg. It stands for someone who created this universe as a small cosmic egg. It is believed that the Goddess created this universe with her smile. She has eight arms holding Kamandalu, Gada, Chakra, Dhanush, lotus-flowers and other edges and a japmala. She rides a lion and since she has eight arms, she is also known as 'Devi AshtaBhuja'. She blesses her devotees with brightness, peace and clarity.
To seek her blessings, the mantra given below can be chanted on the fourth day of Navratri:
Ya Devi sarvabhuteshu Ma Kushmanda Rupena Samsthita
Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah
It means the Goddess who is omnipresent as the personification of universal mother, the goddess who is omnipresent as the embodiment of power and the goddess who is omnipresent as the symbol of peace.I bow to her, I bow to her, I bow to her
First place a kalash and then worship your Ishta devta and other Gods and Goddesses and then pray to Goddess Kushmanda. Before beginning the puja, take flowers in your hands and bow down before the Goddess. And after that offer flowers, coconut, fruits, milk, sindoor, dhoop and decorate the Goddess with jewellery and other adornments. Perform an aarti and end the puja with distribution of prasadam.
